My router is connected to my main telephone socket because I may have a wiring issue I use my laptop upstairs in my house because I like to plug into my speakers to listen to my music because the internal speakers are not up to much good on the laptop,it seems that I connect much quicker when I am nearer to my router or am I imagining this.

If you poke around a bit you should be able to get the computer to tell you the speed of your wireless connection to the router. This can drop to as low as 1 Mbps for a weak signal. And wireless may struggle to keep up with the speed of a good fttc connection.
