Restricting P2P thru a netgear

Half Term, house has been invaded by relatives and assorted offspring with any number of electronic devices.
Does anyone know a simple way of restricting P2P networking via a netgear router. Yet keep normal service?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Restricting P2P thru a netgear

Depending on which Netgear router you have, you can possible use QoS.

in my netgear you can block ports, you could do a sweeping block between 1024 and 65535, you could try this and see what breaks..

You could try the PlusNet member centre safe surf P2P block.

No, that only blocks a few common ports rather than all ports which most clients can be configured to use these days.

Still useful though, and there's the Plusnet Broadband Firewall you might be able to do something there.

FYI I don't believe the surf options still actually works. Finding out which ports the particular p2p packages use and blocking/managing those via QOS is probably the better way around this.

Well the "Surf" ports seem to be blocked on my connection!

Re: Restricting P2P thru a netgear

The Plusnet Broadband Firewall only blocks inbound connections, doesn't it? Being able to receive incoming connections is useful, but not essential for P2P. I'm assuming dvorak was talking about blocking outgoing connections to ports above 1024, which would block most P2P, but also block lots of other things (e.g. 1935, RTMP - streaming flash video).

Thanks, might seem to do the trick, where does it run? assume it is at the PN end of the connection?
If I activate it is it instantaneous, can I switch on and off as required?

Re: Restricting P2P thru a netgear

Yes PN end, as mentioned by ejs only blocks inbound as does Safe Surf - both are on the connections page - but let me know if you have the Safe Surf option. You need to drop the PPP session (by logging into your modem/router) by clicking on Disconnect and then Connect for changes to be active.
