My download speed majority of the time is around 3Mbs. It can be up to 18Mbs but very much like a yoyo biassed to the lower speed. Thank goodness my contract expires soon

A warm welcome to the forums. Variable speed can have many causes ranging from line noise, concurrent use within your home, service configuration mis-matches, through to congestion in the exchange. Generally it is wise to take a systematic approach to this to eliminate the more common causes first.
Please perform a quiet line test - dial 17070 select option 2 using a corded phone plugged into the test socket behind the face plate of the master socket. It should be silent. A noisy phone line (or no dial tone) will have a marked adverse impact on the performance of broadband.
If the line is noisy or there is no dial tone, then a PHONE LINE fault needs to be raised with your phone provider. If this is PlusNet, you can report a fault on line using the button below.
Please post your router stats; for PN TG582n and 2704n routers use the buttons below, for other routers look at the Kitz link.
Also run a BT Wholesale speed test (ideally using an Ethernet wired PC with the WiFi turned off) then run the further diagnostics and post the results here. DO NOT REBOOT the router!
Also find your CURRENT SPEED (PlusNet line profile) from the PlusNet user portal - you will need to log in.
In another browser tab, login into the Plusnet user portal BEFORE clicking the fault & ticket links

Hi Towman, I was told to switch my router off last night for at least 1 minute, which I did, speed test showed 18Mb/s. This morning yoyoing again between 16Mb/s and 3Mb/s. I've done this before after a support chat with plusnet with similar results only at that time I had to leave my router off for 4 hours. Here are my stats:-

How long had the router been connected when you obtained those stats? Basic line stats look good, but depending on how long the router has been connected, there could be some concern over the error counts.
Were the speed tests done over wifi?
Is there any clear time correlation between good and poor performance?
Please post the PlusNET current speed details.

Hi Towman
Speed still varying between 18Mb/s and 3Mb/s. Done quiet line test and the line is quiet. I am going through the wi-fi channels slowly but so far no change. I will have the equipment to carry out ethernet tests sometime this week so will keep this open until then.
Regards
Tom

Hi Tom,
You need only try wifi channels 1,6 and 11 - anything else is likely to lead to channel overlap and poorer performance. inSIDDer (V3 remains free) is a useful tool for finding the best channel.
