Re: Broadband Speed Issues - 03/10/09 - router problem - fixed

NB: all the stats in this post are correct but I have since discovered the cause of the slow speeds - a buggy router firmware version and not PN at all!
1.  Your product type

PlusNet Broadband Pay As You Go with included 2GB bandwidth
2.  Your current usage from the VMBU

Paid-for usage               1.34GB         8am - Midnight
Paid-for allowance:       Up-to 2GB       8am - Midnight
Free usage:                    1.28GB       Midnight - 8am
Total usage:                   2.62GB
3.  Your IP Profile, as reported by Plusnet
Estimated line speed:
Not recorded (service activated before we introduced estimates).
Current line speed:
    8000
4.  Information from the BT Speedtester

I could not capture the results from the BT speed tester. The test results I got were around 450kbps which it reported as a fault being less than the normal 600kbps minimum.
I then got mired in the additional test configuration and could not rerun the test - it insisted on me running the additional test which I decided I did not want to do.
Have just rerun BT Speedtester 48 hours later (8/10/09, 23:00) with following results:
Download speedachieved during the test was - 198 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 600-7150 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :8128 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 7150 Kbps
5.  A Speedtest from an external testing site.

6.  Your gateway
You are currently connected to the "Telehouse North, Juniper 6" gateway. This gateway is sometimes known as thn-ag1.
7.  Your exchange status
VP capacity at this exchange is currently showing as Green.
8.  Any other information
The download speed is extremely peaky. This is a test I ran slightly earlier. The download speed was just under 200kbps for the first half of the test then shot up to near line speed giving a half-decent result. The instantaneous download speed can fluctuate wildly during the course of these tests which in itself indicates a problem somewhere.

Collecting all this data using a system exhibiting these dire download speeds is very time-consuming - this has taken me best part of an hour so please PN, sort this problem out ASAP!!

Re: Broadband Speed Issues - 03/10/09

@Barry
You may wish to move/remove my post #14 now I have discovered that the very slow speeds I was seeing were caused by a buggy firmware version from 3Com and the problems have been fixed by reflashing the router firmware back to the previous version.
