Random internet drop outs, please help!

Hi everyone,
My setup:
Router: Asus RT-N66U
Modem: TP-Link ADSL2+Ethernet/USB modem
Modem line information:
                                  Upstream          Downstream
SNR Margin:                20.0                 6.0 db
Line Attenuation:          11.7                 6.7  db
Data Rate:                    2272                 1161 kbps
Max Rate:                    19632              1104 kbps
POWER:                      17.3                  11.3 dbm
CRC:                            0                  633

Over the past week I have been encountering issues with my broadband dropping out. Last Friday it started playing up, the drops became for frequent. I found that I had interference on my Landline and traced it down to a faulty cable going into the modem. I immediately replaced that cable and checked all other cables, filters etc. once I replaced the faulty cable, the Landline interference was gone and the drop outs were no more for 3 days, until...it drops out again, a couple of times within 20 minutes or so.  it's got to a point where it's dropping at least once every 24 hrs, being unstable as it is the exchange has placed a 2.71mbps IP profile on my line which is rather frustrating for the family as you can imagine..So now I'm here... I've ruled out faulty cables/filters, so it must be something else, maybe software related on the router or modem? Is it worth resetting the modem to factory defaults? Here's the log for the Asus router when one of the drops occur;
Dec 24 13:17:06 pppd[443]: No response to 10 echo-requests
Dec 24 13:17:06 pppd[443]: Serial link appears to be disconnected.
Dec 24 13:17:06 pppd[443]: Connect time 859.6 minutes.
Dec 24 13:17:06 pppd[443]: Sent 230563176 bytes, received 1937266187 bytes.

Dec 24 13:17:06 dnsmasq[369]: using nameserver 192.168.1.1#53
Dec 24 13:17:10 WAN Connection: Fail to connect with some issues.
Dec 24 13:17:10 stop_nat_rules: apply the redirect_rules!
Dec 24 13:17:12 pppd[443]: Connection terminated.
Dec 24 13:17:13 pppd[443]: Sent PADT
Dec 24 13:17:13 pppd[443]: Modem hangup
Dec 24 13:17:58 pppd[443]: Timeout waiting for PADO packets
Dec 24 13:18:36 miniupnpd[800]: ioctl(s, SIOCGIFADDR, ...): No such device
Dec 24 13:18:36 miniupnpd[800]: ioctl(s, SIOCGIFADDR, ...): No such device
Dec 24 13:18:36 miniupnpd[800]: Failed to get ip address for interface ppp0
So if anyone can have any insight to what this might be, that would be brilliant.
Thanks for reading,
Merry Christmas to you all! Smiley Smiley

Re: Random internet drop outs, please help!

Hi,
Those router stats figures look very odd.  Was that a copy & paste or did you transcribe the figures?  The upstream figures do not have units, if I assume that they are the same, then US is twice the DS and is significantly more than the ADSL US specification maximum.
Do you have another router you can try?
Do you have dial tone?
Have you done a quiet line test?  Dial 17070 option 2.
Do you know how close you are to the exchange?

Re: Random internet drop outs, please help!

Hi Townman,
My apologies I mistyped the upstream and downstream and got them the wrong way around. I haven't been able to post an update the last few days due to Christmas and what not, it seems to have sorted itself out for now, but I'll keep an eye on it and if anything happens I'll be sure to update this thread if any problems arise. Thanks for your speedy response.  Smiley

Also to answer your questions:
1) I do have another router somewhere, I'd have to find it though.
2) Yes I have a dial tone.
3) I've done it last week, never did one before but it was quiet.
4) I'd say I'm roughly around 200m away from the exchange.
But as I said, it seems to have sorted itself out for now (fingers crossed).  Smiley
Thanks.

Re: Random internet drop outs, please help!

Hi Chazric,
These issues rarely sort themselves out - they just get less sever for a time until they break completely.  This has the potential profile of an iffy joint, which could remain OK or fail at any time.
If I presume that your only error was to have got the column headings the wrong way around, then I make the following observations on the information posted...
1. With the reported attenuation (confirmed by your statement of distance from the exchange) you ought to be seeing something very close to the 24Mbps maximum of ADSL2.
2. The reported maximum speed if significantly below that expectations for the line.
3. The actual speed is substantially lower than the reported maximum.
4. The SNRM (20dB) is substantially higher than the normal 6dB

All of these point to a problematic line, struggling to maintain stability.
Might I recommend that you follow in detail the speed issues thread and report here all of the requested information please?  We might thereby prevent a complete failure of your BT circuit.

Re: Random internet drop outs, please help!

Hi chazric,
I can see we reset the SNR on the 31st, things are looking more stable in terms of up time (over 72 hours)
How are things from your point of view?

Re: Random internet drop outs, please help!

Hi,
apologies for the late reply. Thanks for the quick help, so far so good from what I have experienced. Speeds seem to be getting back to normal also.  Smiley
Thanks.
