Random disconnections still persistent with interleaving switched on.

I am in desperate need for any ideas to help me sort my annoying internet problem out?
I have been getting several disconnections a day for the last 2-3 weeks.  PlusNet have activated interleaving on my phone line and the problem persists.  Sad
I had the the same problem a year ago and after three BT engineer visits the line dropped only was a day, which wasn't so bad.  I do not have the time for this too happen all over again.
I am running directly from the master socket, the BT open reach engineer installed a proper microfilter which is directly connected to the master socket.  I have tried other microfilters and the problem persists.  I cannot hear any crackling on the phone line.  My downstream SNR drops to 1db at random intervals and rises to a maximum of 15db.
My IP profile seems to change every other day and sometimes drops down to a pathetic 150kbs.  Somestimes the sync is higher but the connection speed is still nearly as slow as dial-up.
If the problem with my internet cannot be sorted out sooner rather than later, I will have to reluctently ditch my BT line completely.  I cannot tolerate this every year.  Cry
PlusNet customer services have been great, the problem is obviously down to some inferior BT equipment somewhere down the line.  I am hoping they will swap my wire at the exchange like they mentioned last time.

Mark.

Can any one reading this do any better?

I have just got the above.
Below was my test before that.

Re: Random disconnections still persistent with interleaving switched on.

Have you also tried another router from a friend to eliminate this as a cause of the problem?
It may be worth capturing some stats using DMT Tools or Routerstat on your PC for a couple of days and see if there is a pattern in the resync's.

Re: Random disconnections still persistent with interleaving switched on.

I can only obtain a cable router so I have reluctently decided to buy a new ZyXEL P660HWP Super G+.  Just hoping this will solve some of my problems.  My thomson speedtouch died just after 12 months of use.
My current router is a 3com office connect which has never given me any problems in the past.
The disconnections occur at random intervals throughout the day, sometimes I get two within one minute.

Re: Random disconnections still persistent with interleaving switched on.

Now testing my new router, over three hours of up time with no problems so far.
noise margin upstream: 23 db
output power downstream: 18 db
attenuation upstream: 30 db
noise margin downstream: 9 db
output power upstream: 12 db
attenuation downstream: 52 db
I would appriciate it if any one could let me know on how good or bad my line stats are?

Thanks Mark.

Re: Random disconnections still persistent with interleaving switched on.

Would your random drop outs happen in periods of less than three hours?
Your stats look good.  The default SNRM target is six, but yours seems to have been raised to 9dB by the BT exchange trying to stabilise your connection.  If your connection instability problems have been resolved then with time (give it a couple of days of continuous high sync speeds) you will have a higher IP Profile.  The theoretical maximum IP Profile for your line's attenuation of 52dB is 3500kbps.
Good luck.

Re: Random disconnections still persistent with interleaving switched on.

No loss of sync for 24 hours, just reset router and download speeds are much improved.  Looking like its a problematic router after all.  Wink
I will give it a couple more days and I can finally close my ticket.  I just cant work out on why my routers all seem to malfunction after a few months use.
Would a surge protector on my adsl line cause any problems with my stats?
Thanks Mick for mentioning about the possibility of a router problem.

Re: Random disconnections still persistent with interleaving switched on.

It looks like a dodgy router.  Glad you sorted this out!  Let's hope that's the end of your problem.
To be honest routers & their power supplies are pretty resilient these days.  I live in an area where brown outs and black outs are a regular occurence and have had an old DG834v1 Netgear running for years.  It survived lightining storms and dozens of power surges, without the telephone line being protected (other than BT's own protection filter in the master socket).  I have no idea how surge protectors affect telephone lines.  Please check your router SNRM and attenuation with and without surge protection and report back.

Re: Random disconnections still persistent with interleaving switched on.

New router is losing sync more than my old one, I was not aware that "C02 Call Terminated" meant loss of sync.  The log only stores 128 records but is emailing me the logs on a hourly basis.  My download speed has dropped again to 734 kb/s.  I better contact plusnet again.

Re: Random disconnections still persistent with interleaving switched on.

Probably worth giving the surge protector a before/after test. The problem is that properly built phone line protectors tend to have some insertion loss anyway but it should be less than the router can measure.

Re: Random disconnections still persistent with interleaving switched on.

Hi Mark,
BT would like to send an engineer.
Can you please retest without any surge protectors on your line?  If you're still getting disconnections then, could you please get back to us letting us know when you'll be available for an engineer appointment and we'll get one sorted for you.

Re: Random disconnections still persistent with interleaving switched on.

Incidentally since 2000 I've had one computer completely fried by lightning (the strike also damaged phone lines and a chimney), had a surge protector go open circuit, and lost a router, switch, interface card and the serial port of the PC it was connected to (though the PC was OK).
Vulnerability varies by area but round here a lot of phone lines are overhead, not buried.
The protector in a master socket really isn't much help.

Re: Random disconnections still persistent with interleaving switched on.

After much consideration I have regretably decided to end my contract with PlusNet and BT.  It is a shame as PlusNet are fantastic ISP let down by a poor BT infrastructure.  I need more from my broadband and a fluctuating 2Mb service is becoming a drag now.  Hopefully BT will upgrade there copper based networks and rely on optical fibre.  I also get a bit envious when most people I hear from getting much better speeds and still pay the same money.
I would recommnend PlusNet to anyone who wants a decent ISP, wish I could say the same for BT.
I have had three BT engineer visits in the past and enough is enough.  I was told that I am a considerable distance from the exchange and this has impact on speed and reliabilty.  My downstream attenuation is a poor 52db.

Mark.

Re: Random disconnections still persistent with interleaving switched on.

Sorry for hijack.
I'm a bit of a computer newbie and am having problems with my PlusNet/BT product, so am interested in you predicament.
So my question is:
If you are quitting BT, what options have you got for broadband that doesn't involve BT?
My issue is being 'looked' at and although the process so far seems unnecessarily painful, I must be patient, and it will hopefully get sorted. If I put the symptoms in google it doesn't look good for it getting resolved, but I suppose people don't publicise issues along the lines of "I had this problem and it got fixed". So I'm thinking ahead, if it doesn't get fixed, for other options for broadband. We don't have cable where I live.
