Random Lag Spikes Whilst Gaming

My internet usually stays around 40ms when playing League of Legends and I don't usually have problems unless more than 2 people are using the internet at the same time, or at peak times (which still shouldn't affect the service).

The issue now is no matter what time of day, I'm getting random lag spikes ranging from 300ms to 3000ms which makes games unplayable. It's what I spend a great deal of my free time doing and is very frustrating. I've been recording the peak pings I've been getting using a WinMTR and just took a sample of my internet using Wireshark (see image attached) if someone doesn't mind making sense of all the data?

Re: Random Lag Spikes Whilst Gaming

Hi @jammy2895

Sorry to hear you were experiencing this. I have found that interleaving was added to your connection which is known to interfere with gaming. I have removed this for you and you should notice an improvement within a few hours.

Re: Random Lag Spikes Whilst Gaming

@SammyM

here's some more data. I played one game and it felt like my average ping was 2000

Re: Random Lag Spikes Whilst Gaming

Hi @jammy2895

Sorry to see you are still having issues - I checked again and it looks like Sammy's previous order to remove Interleaving failed.

I have replaced this and it should complete on Monday.

If after then you are still having this issue, please let us know!

Kind Regards

Re: Random Lag Spikes Whilst Gaming

I'm unclear how adding interleaving would create wildly-varying latency. Obviously, it'll increase the latency, but if anything interleaving will solve a variable-latency problem (if caused by errors that require retransmissions).

Do your router stats show a faster growing error seconds ("ES") count than usual?

Presumably you're gaming over a wired connection (not wi-fi)?

Have you checked that nothing is uploading data (e.g., Carbonite, Mozy, DropBox, OneDrive)? This can cause buffer-bloat, which makes latency skyrocket.

Re: Random Lag Spikes Whilst Gaming

Hi @richi, those were my thoughts exactly. I have had a few people with similar problems on forums and they said interleaving was the issue. I always make sure nothing is uploading data, same for anything downloading such as steam.

I'll look up how to check error seconds and get back to you on that. When i pinged google using cmd i got 7 pings at 33 <34 <35 but 3 of the pings came back as "request timed out". Could it be packet loss?

Re: Random Lag Spikes Whilst Gaming

Just did a speedtest, download speeds at 7.4mbps and straight away it registered as downloading. When it switched to uploading, it took half the test time to get going (about 4seconds) and once it had it was only sittting at 0.4-0.7mbps.

Re: Random Lag Spikes Whilst Gaming

Yes, those ICMP echo (ping) packets were indeed getting lost, either on their way to Google, or on their way back. 30% is worrying on an idle connection.

Sounds like you're using Windows. Try this to get 50 samples, instead of 10 (and to use a server I know responds consistently):
PING -N 50 9.9.9.9

(However, ping isn't a totally reliable way of measuring packet loss, because if there's a link on the path to the server that's congested, it will usually deprioritise or drop ICMP echo segments before IP segments. And by "lost" we mean delayed more than the default timeout, which is usually 4 seconds round-trip.)

That's normal. When it's downloading it knows instantly how much data it's receiving. But when it's uploading, it takes a while before it hears the other side telling it how much it's receiving.

Re: Random Lag Spikes Whilst Gaming

Can't find a program which will work with plusnet routers to check FEC's. Could you point me in the right direction? Also realised i never answered your questions fully, yes it is a wired connection.

Here are the stats from the router, not been on long, only 30mins as I recently restarted the router as I had a spare adsl filter but it made no difference:

1 - Product name: Plusnet Router
2 - Serial number:
3 - Firmware version: 7.275.6_F2704N_Plusnet
4 - Board version: F@ST2704N
5 - Mode ADSL
6 - Uptime: 0 days 00:31:35
7 - Data rate: 888/10516
8 - Maximum data rate: 888/11324
9 - Noise margin: 15.6/9.0
10 - Line attenuation: 10.3/28.5
12 - Data sent/received: 44.1M/587.1M
20 - Broadband username:
21 - Wi-Fi network/SSID:
22 - Wi-Fi connections: Enable(802.11 b/g/n(up to 144 Mb/s))20 MHz WPS enabled
23 - Wi-Fi security: WPA2
24 - Wi-Fi channel: Automatic (Smart Wireless)
25 - Firewall: Default
26 - MAC Address:
27 - Software variant Version 1.0
28 - Boot loader: 7.275.6
