Query on Speeds tonight

I just noticed that my browsing seemed a little sluggish tonight, so did various speedtests at both the plusnet advertised http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk, bt's speedtest, and speedtest.net
My router is synced at 5440 up, and 448 down so correct for my profile.
I've typically gotton around 3000-3800 down and 350up when doing speed tests previously.
Now, BT test says no problem, and gives me around 3mb download, however both the plusnet tester and speedtest.net give random speeds anywhere between 700 and 1500.  Latency was also up to around the 220ms mark too.
The exchange status is green and the weathers a little windy but nothing major.
Anyone any ideas? I plan to test it later on to see if it's just contention on plusnet. However surely dropping down to less than 1mb on some of the tests is a bit low, even for contention.
If anyone from plusnet chances to come accross this, my username is griffonline.

latency is still over 200 (to a server in maidenhead) but now plusnet speed test says 3449 / 373kpbs, and speedtest.net says 2785 / 369kbps so looks like it was contention or someother force at work.  Surely contention would't drop my speed that low:

If you've used Speedtest.net's speed tester and are using their latency figure - it's not very relaible!
You're better to open a Command Promt (Start>Run and type cmd) and pinging bbc.co.uk or clarity.jolt.co.uk - that'll give you a more realistic latency figure!

My router is synched at 6272 down 448 up with a line profile of 5500.  For the last few days I've been getting speeds fluctuating from around 5000Kbps morning and at night, down to 672Kbps in the early evening.  My exchange is green too.  My problems are running in a separate thread on the forum.  Glad to know I'm not alone.  Like you, I'm beginning to wonder if this is a PlusNet contention problem.

Hi Griff,
If that was from turning the PC on, and assuming you're on a windows PC, it might be that it's patch Tuesday today and your computer was downloading updates for a short while - only a thought.

This has been going on for several weeks and no one from PN has actually acknowledged that the problem exist, or if it is the pipe, just PN, or the internet as a whole.
James has hinted that his O2 connection has the same problem.  Until recently I was OK
How do I get these results into a spread sheet and show the time - what format is the time in?

Save it as a .txt file and then import it into Excel via the wizard as a space delimited file. You’ll just need to change the 5th Nov entries to the same format as the other entries ie the day of the week followed by the time

my speed's never been fantastic but was a stable 4.2 for a while.
Recently, that's dropped slower and slower to about 3.
This evening tho, it's plummeted to a pathetic 0.4.
I'm paying about £22/month for this. Time to look elsewhere - I can get better that this for less than a tenner.

I used the PN speed test this morning and got 5.5 but just done it again and could only manage 0.4
There seems to be a problem somewhere

My 2p's worth - a range of 527 to 5681 (10:1).
Been going on for a while but raised a ticket and found that my exchange is showing contention issues, but this is a bit much.
Mate on same exchange (Sky) doesn't see any drop - how does that work?

Hmmm... well as it seems to have started today for many of you I'd say the cause is definitely patch Tuesday, though the advance bulletin didn't suggest that there were any large patches.

Sorry Pierre, that post wasn't directed at you individually - more the guys posting about tonight specifically. I'm sorry you're having some troubles, I'd recommend raising a ticket to get the speed issues you're posting about looked at. I'll check on it when I'm back in the office in the morning and if it hasn't moved anywhere I'll get on it.

They speeds I posted were using the speedtester linked from the plusnet page.
I've got windows updates set to notify me instead of doing it automatically so didn't see any updates.  The machine had been for around 20 mins so, while not out of the question, it was unlikely to be that causing it.
I did a few tests over the couse of half an hour and got the same results give or take.  Then when testing it after 10pm, it seemed to be ok.  Looking back at previous test results seem to suggest it goes ok after 10ish too.
I'll do some tests tomorrow night around the same time and let you know if it's the same.
