Product Switch?

Smiley Hi All,
I'm currently on the PlusNet Broadband Pay As You Go product and am considering switching to PlusNet Broadband Your Way Option 2 and would like to ask if the Your Way Option 2 product is slower than my current one (up to 8mb).
Cheers.

Re: Product Switch?

Hi there,
It really depends on what you use the service for, if you're talking gaming, VOIP or web then both will be the same. If you're talking about P2P at peak then your current service will be quicker.
You can compare the two here.

Re: Product Switch?

Smiley Thanks for the reply Mand,
I may yet decide to swap products as I'm not really into P2P although I occasionally swap/send a file through MSN which I don't think is classed as P2P.
What concerns me more at the moment is the poor speed of my connection and reading the forum I'm not alone.
My profile is set at 2500 (last time I checked yesterday) yet on the beta "My Broadband" speed test it's around 652kbps at best this evening which to be honest I'm getting fed up with as things were never this bad until recently.
Also bear in mind the profile of 2500 is also one of the slowest too, I've no idea what BT's done recently but I do feel inclined to try another broadband service provider.

Re: Product Switch?

As you are on PAYG have you tried switching to the RIN trial username@plusdsl2.net and see if it makes any difference

Re: Product Switch?

The low speed might be due to contention at the exchange.  You can check exchange status here.  Does that show it as red?

Re: Product Switch?

Smiley Hello,
Thanks for the replies.
I'm on the plusdsl2 connection and have also switched back a couple of times to check if the normal one is better or worse but there seems little difference + my exchange has no capacity or other problems at the moment.
My theory is that BT has changed the way it calculates Broadband speeds in the last couple of Months but of course I may be wrong, than again facts speak louder than words and my Broadband speed has certainly gone down whereas before it was pretty stable around the 3500 mark at least.
Cheers.

If it's the BT profile that's causing you problems then switching provider's not going to help.
Looks like your line is pretty stable at the speed your getting as it doesn't fluctuate much suggesting that you're unlikely to get much above 2-2.5Mbps. Below are the last few reports from BT. This first couple of columns are the bRAS rate your throughout is based on and the date it was applied. The second two columns are the respective entries for the rate your equipment was synchronised with the exchange at.

Your exchange doesn't seem to be contended from checking here so that's not the problem.
You might want to try tweaking your RWIN/MTU settings.
It would also help if you could provide the results from a BT Speedtest.

Re: Product Switch?

You may be able to get some more speed out of your line.
I would try the following; (Warning time and cash most be spent.)
1) Move the router to the BT Master socket.
2) Replace all MicroFilter's with high quality ones. Or a filter face plate on the master socket.
3) Google "ring wire removal" this is a mircual cure that can give a few extra dB's on the Signal Noise ratio. And hence more Mb's.
Chilly
PS I doubt you would see more that an extra 1Mb

Re: Product Switch?

Smiley Hi,
Thanks again, I'll try tweaking the RWIN/MTU settings and see what happens but my point really was that I suspect BT has changed the way they calculate connection speeds or the stability of connections to the up to 8MB product some time in the last few Months as I was certainly getting faster speeds before.
Cheers.
