Problems with TP-Link TD-W9980 on ADSL

My Netgear DGND3300 has packed up, so I bought a TP-Link TD-W9980 XDSL router/modem, thinking it would handy for when I eventually move to fibre-optic broadband.  However, I can't get it to connect.
I've tried the quick-start settings, picking ADSL/Plusnet, and I've tried entering the settings manually VPI=0, VCI=38, VC-Mux, PPoA/PPP & PAP/CHAP authentication.  No success either way.  The DSL light just keeps flashing.
I've left it on overnight, thinking it might be training.
From the Diagnostics page I get "test xDSL synchronisation fail"  so I guess it's  most likely settings.
I've searched through the forums and people do get this working with Plusnet  ADSL.  Anyone got any clues what I might have done incorrectly?  Have I bought the wrong router? Is it a dud?
From the logs I get a lot of this:

Have you entered your plusnet logon correctly    username@plusdsl.net  and the password you used at plusnet registration

Re: Problems with TP-Link TD-W9980 on ADSL

Yep, I have used my @plusdsl.net login name, and I've checked my p/word is correct a few times.  Currently using a back-up router.  All the settings appear the same between this, my new TD-W9980 and my netgear DGND3300.

Re: Problems with TP-Link TD-W9980 on ADSL

See attached pdf for screenshots of setup screens, plus log file extract which doesn't show any changes.  I also did a factory reset on the TDW9980 and started setup again.  Still no joy.
As far as I can tell, I have all the settings the same between routers, and also username/password. Because I've been using a different router as a backup, I did a factory reset on that then plugged in my own settings.  That works fine, so I'm confident I know my user name and password.
I'm coming to the conclusion that either the router is faulty, or its a PoS that I no longer want to own.  Either way I'm about to send it back.

Re: Problems with TP-Link TD-W9980 on ADSL

What do you have on your DSL Settings page.
It should say:
DSL Modulation Type: Auto Sync-up
Annex Type:A/B/L/M
Tick the two check boxes.

Re: Problems with TP-Link TD-W9980 on ADSL

You could try explicitly selecting whichever of ADSL2+, ADSL2 or G.dmt (ADSL1) is most appropriate for your line. Or the one you got could be a dud.

Re: Problems with TP-Link TD-W9980 on ADSL

Ejs,
yep, tried all that, too.  Been through all the options one at a time, in every combo I can work out.
I've requested an RMA, so it'll be going back tomorrow or Wednesday.  See if mine is a dud.
Thanks for everyone's comments.  At least I've been thinking on the right lines.
Cheers.
