Re: Problems with IPlayer & Unlimited & Value

Hi there again!
I thought I would download the Franz Ferdinand highlights from Glastonbury (the ones I failed to stream the other night) before they disappear from IPlayer. Apparently I need 49 hours to download a 60 minute programme at 24kb/s! Just did a My Broadband Speed test and the result is 4286 kbps (536kB/s). It is Sunday night, 9pm, so I don't expect this is regarded as peak time, is it? Wireshark says I am on 0x60 (still not sure what it means but I thought you might need all the info)... So, is this a Plusnet issue or a BBC IPlayer one? Or are Franz Ferdinand really really avoiding me?

It's picked up a bit, downloading 1 item at 32Kb/s.  Huh

Re: Problems with IPlayer & Unlimited & Value

Top Gear looks like it's going to complete in around 25 minutes for me - but then I'm on PAYG (equivalent of Pro) and the IP Stream Connect trial.
The only gateway looking even slightly busy at the moment is PCL-AG01 so if you are on that one it may be worth reconnecting to try another.

Not fair!  Wink
Well I am on ptn-ag1 so not the one which is slightly busy: 4 hours 33 left to go so big improvement there, but still, I started this download around 8.30pm and it is now 9.43!

Re: Problems with IPlayer & Unlimited & Value

I assume it is too late to go back to my previous package (PlusNet Broadband Your Way Option 3) now is it? I switched to Unlimited on 23 June.

Re: Problems with IPlayer & Unlimited & Value

This morning it is downloading at 3.66Mb/s. If anyone can explain this to me I would be grateful.  Smiley
PS: Had to reconnect first thing in the morning; is there a link?

There aren't any restrictions on downloads until 12 noon - see http://www.plus.net/support/broadband/quality_broadband/speed.shtml

Re: Problems with IPlayer & Unlimited & Value

Morning,
If you refer to this link:
http://www.plus.net/support/broadband/quality_broadband/speed.shtml#valuespeeds
iPlayer "downloads" are treated as download servers whereas the actual streaming should just be gold traffic.  So, if you're actually downloading from iPlayer, the speeds will be reduced during peak times of the day.

Re: Problems with IPlayer & Unlimited & Value

Ah thanks, my mistake, I was convinced weekends were considered off-peak (but maybe I am confusing with something else, BT phone calls perhaps, or train tickets...)!
Would you not say that 24/32 Kb/s is still on the slow side, though? Or can this just be explained by contention, congestion, whatever it is called? The reason I ask is that it is not the first time it happens.
Right, well I've got my download now!  Smiley
Cheers!

Re: Problems with IPlayer & Unlimited & Value

That's going to depend on whether you mean kibobytes or kilobits Smiley
If we're talking 32 kilobytes during peak times on Value, then that's pretty much how the service is designed to work.
