Previous ISP capped by download

Hello all.
I have had sky broadband connect for approx 3 weeks and have had to cancel because I download a couple of games from steam and Mac os Lion and clocked up 20GBs of download in 2 days. Which I thought was ok. Later I found out that I was only every aloud to use 1.3GB a day.
I was told by two the BT had put a cap on my line and throttled me at 256kbs for 3 months between the hours of 5-12.
I have now joined plusnet and the switchover is due to take place.
The thing I am worried about is… will this cap fo 256kbs still be in place on my line? Even tho I am now with plusnet.
I would not be worried it sky controlled the cap but apparently BT have added the cap because they are in control of broadband in my area/
Thanks in advance everyone.

Re: Previous ISP capped by download

ISP are the only ones that will put a cap on the line BT will not. In fact BT want you to use the connection as much as possible as more data transferred the more they can charge the ISP.

Re: Previous ISP capped by download

Can you post the stats from your router
attenuation, speed and noise margin
You are probably on the Sky 2Mb offering

Re: Previous ISP capped by download

But if you aren't on LLU then you are using a BT resold product which sounds as though it has been set at 2Mb standard.
So either Sky have capped your product or ADSLMax isn't available on your line
If you look here http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange_search is your exchange ADSL Max enabled

Re: Previous ISP capped by download

Hi tedglen2,
We won't carry over any 'cap' from another provider. I would point out though, that you've signed up to our Value package which is 10GB per month usage. However, between midnight and 8am ever day anything you used i not counted towards your allowance, so if you can schedule any large downloads between those times, as many do, you may be able to manage on the 10GB allowance.

Re: Previous ISP capped by download

thanks for reply. could you also confirm that BT have not configured my line for max 2mbs ? sky told my i could get 6 but i only ever got 2.
also i would be doing my downloads between 12 and 4. and only using broadband for browsing and xbox live... so 10gb should be ok ?

This is what I got when I put your phone number into the BT availability checker...
"Our test also indicates that your line currently supports an estimated ADSL Max broadband line speed of 7Mbps; typically the line speed would range between 6Mbps and 8Mbps."

You should be fine with the 10GB, but just bear in mind that some of the patches for Xbox games can be large, so if you're prompted to update then make sure you check how big that is; you can always wait until after midnight to download it if that's the case. Also, you can check your usage on a day-to-day basis to keep an eye on how it's going, by logging into the member centre on our website.
