Ports Still Closed (TG582n) (WoL)

Hi,
I am trying to set up Wake-on-LAN (WoL).
I have set up a new "Game or Application" as follows:
UDP 9 - 9
I have assigned this to my PC.
I have updated the router configuration file to include the line:
arpadd intf=LocalNetwork ip=192.168.1.16 hwaddr=24:53:5F:56:06:34
I can WoL over the ethernet, but not over the internet.
When using canyouseeme.org or yougetsignal.com it's telling me my port 9 is closed.
If I turn off the router firewall completely, it's still closed... and so is every other common port.
I have checked my broadband firewall settings here too: https://portal.plus.net/my.html?action=firewall
When making a change here it asks me to restart my modem (which I did just to make sure my 'off' setting was applied)
When using wireshark (a packet sniffer) I see no magic packet traffic destined to my PC
I don't really know what else to try, so I am going to bed for now!
Cheers,
Matt

Re: Ports Still Closed (TG582n) (WoL)

This may help, point you in the right direction (hopefully)
http://npr.me.uk/wol.html
It was done for the O2 version of the  TG585v7 and TG587n v2. routers

Re: Ports Still Closed (TG582n) (WoL)

Hi, cheers for the reply. I followed that site to the letter (Except of course I choose port 9 and my PC's static IP and MAC address are different).
Last night I was having trouble with even setting up SSH on port 22 to the PC but this morning everything seems to have worked flawlessly (so that's good)
I get the feeling that maybe it's not the router that's causing me this grief and perhaps it's the PC I am trying to WoL... it definitely has WoL capabilities, I can do it on the home network, just not the internet yet.
Thanks for the help Smiley
[edit]Saying that, there is nothing in the event logs for the router (i.e. FIREWALL rule : Protocol: UDP.........)[/edit]

Re: Ports Still Closed (TG582n) (WoL)

Being a network pro I occasionally need to access my server at home remotely but don't want to leave it running all the time.
I tried all the options put forward on this and other boards but none of them work.
You need a router that holds a static ARP table, most home routers don't have this feature.
I eventually bought a Wolly box from http://www.wollydigital.eu - not cheap but does the job.

Re: Ports Still Closed (TG582n) (WoL)

The Technicolor does have a static arp table.
You access it via cli commands, or by editing the routers config file.

Re: Ports Still Closed (TG582n) (WoL)

Using CLI is there a way to determine if my configuration has been successful
At a guess, this looks useful (confirmation*?)
If I am to use arplist I see my entry:
:ip arplist
Interface          IP-address            HW-address        Type
3  LocalNetwork    192.168.1.55          64:34:6b:dc:8f:3D DYNAMIC
3  LocalNetwork    192.168.1.16          24:53:5f:56:06:34 STATIC
*From this I presume I was successful in my 'manual reconfiguration'
Is there anything else I should be looking at that I have completely missed?
I have followed all 3 steps like a good boy on your site (npr) :).
Cheers,
Matt

Re: Ports Still Closed (TG582n) (WoL)

I assume this is the PC you wish to wake:
3  LocalNetwork    192.168.1.16          24:53:5f:56:06:34 STATIC
If the IP and MAC address is correct the only other thing I can suggest is to use a dynamic IP address, port forward doesn't always work well with a static IP address in these routers.
Ensure you tick "always use the same IP address" when using a dynamic IP.
If you need to specify a IP address you can use this "Static DHCP" method http://npr.me.uk/telnet.html#lanip
Note:
Remember to change the ARP table if you switch to a dynamic IP address.

Good luck  Cheesy

Re: Ports Still Closed (TG582n) (WoL)

@npr
I have not tested it, but would this work as well, it will be broadcasting the magic packet to the whole lan.
Not sure if this router allows using the broadcast address.
arpadd intf=LocalNetwork ip=192.168.1.252 hwaddr=ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
Never got it working with only the application rule in use, udp port 7.

Re: Ports Still Closed (TG582n) (WoL)

Never tried using a broadcast mac address, so can't really comment.
I suspect your problem is with using 192.168.1.252 :-
1) This address is within the routers dhcp pool which are best not used as a static IP.
That is unless you use this method to assign is as a static DHCP address.
http://npr.me.uk/telnet.html#lanip
2) Port forwarding to devices on a static lan IP doesn't work well with this router.
I suggest trying with a full dhcp assigned IP first, then once you've got that working move to the above static dhcp address if you must.

Re: Ports Still Closed (TG582n) (WoL)

Hiya,
I have not assigned any static IP to my devices, I am using dhcp, I went in the Technicolor TG582n router and ticked the box to have infinite lease time.
I struggled for days with the port forwarding [only LAN worked] till I found your website and followed the instruction to add the device in the arp list.
Thanks ever so much for providing this information, much appreciated.
I used your example with the one row, and all works perfect now, I can even wake up my PC with my Smartphone and Tablet both Android over the Internet.
Thank you.

I can't access the link above. Is the link dead or has it been updated? TIA

Re: Ports Still Closed (TG582n) (WoL)

@emdiesse - You need to use the broadcast address of your public IP and set the router to port forward UDP packets on port 9 to the internal broadcast address.

@Anonymous this thread is over 2 years old so I would imagine the OP has their answer by now.

@Browni - I never even looked at the timestamp as it came up as a new unread post so I replied!
