Port forwarding with separate modem/router

I wish networking wasn't so difficult 
I have got a TP-Link TD8817 and a Netgear R7000 up and running and seemingly working fine.
I don't think the 8817 is in bridge mode as the Netgear said it when plugged into the 8817 that it was changing IP addresses to avoid conflict. It is now dishing out IP addresses to my devices like 10.0.0.2, 10.0.05, etc.
I now need to forward port 443 so that I can access my homeserver from outside the network. how do I do this. Do I do it on the 8817 or the netgear or both. Does it require that the 8817 is in bridge mode.
Struggling with all this so words of one syllable appreciated!

A bit more info:
Well I ended up getting a lot of DNS problems and web pages resolving host so now have it set up like this guy suggested (substitute R7000 for WR1043ND):
Note to anyone considering a similar setup and is a little lost on the networking front.... As supplied both routers have the same default IP address and DHCP switched on. I changed the TD-8817 from the supplied 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.0.1 and switched DHCP off. I left the TL-WR1043ND router with the supplied 192.168.1.1 address and DHCP switched on, but configured the WAN connection as 192.168.0.250 (note this could be anything you like in the 192.168.0.xxx range, e.g. 192.168.0.100), subnet 255.255.255.0, gateway as 192.168.0.1 and DNS as 192.168.0.1 to ensure internet traffic from the TL-WR1043ND passes to and from the TD-8817 modem/router. All was up and running smoothly within 30 mins. This setup has also continued to run without any rebooting for the last couple of months I've had the kit.
not sure if this means the 8817 is bridged or not but it works fine although I still need to forward 443 to access my homeserver from outside.

Any pointers much appreciated.
