My connection as been really stable for the last six weeks I connected to Skype before and lost connection Plusnet Assist popped up and asked me if I wanted to fix it I did this and was told to reboot my router in which I did and my connection returned,can this assist be trusted in it's findings

From what you've said I would say yes definitely - you had a connection problem, assist picked up on this and suggested a solution, you followed this suggestion and the problem was fixed? That sounds pretty trustworthy to me.
Granted it's not for everyone (mainly those who like to tinker with their connections) but for people who just use the broadband to get online it prevents and helps with a fair few problems.
