Plusnet 2704n router

Hello, I'd like to understand if there is an opportunity to upgrade the existing router I have - the 2704n. I would like to get faster broadband speeds and understand this is a very basic router. Could you help with this? Thanks.

Re: Plusnet 2704n router

Your speeds are only partly determined by the router.

If you enter your phone number here https://www.broadbandchecker.btwholesale.com/#/ADSL You should see the expected speeds and if you could get any faster by upgrading to fibre.

Are the speeds you are seeing in line with these results?

Re: Plusnet 2704n router

@kimmysammy Upgrading your router would probably not increase your speed - that depends on the characteristics of your connection.

Plusnet only supply these 'basic' routers, there are no better ones available from them, and in any case, to get a new one, you would have to request one at contract renewal.

If you want one with better wireless performance, it is suggested that you buy a BT HH6 - available for £20-£30 on eBay.

Edit: @dvorak beat me to it.😉

Re: Plusnet 2704n router

So you’re currently on ADSL and your speeds are 16mbps - are these the speeds you’re seeing?

If you upgrade to fibre you should get between 60-80mbps.

Re: Plusnet 2704n router

I am currently getting around 12mbps on wireless, within a couple of metres from the router, which is performing quite well at the moment. What do you think?

Re: Plusnet 2704n router

Doubtful a new router will help much with things as they are currently.

An upgrade to fibre should increase your speeds substantially.

But it also depends on what you’re using the connection for.

Thanks for this! I'll consider options. Contract comes to an end in under two months.

Re: Plusnet 2704n router

I would have thought PlusNet would allow you to upgrade to fibre whilst you're under contract, after all you're still going to a customer to them? I could be wrong though, it is worth contacting support and ask.

Re: Plusnet 2704n router

The real question is why do you think you need more speed?  What perceived problem do you seek to fix?
