Since 11:47 today (16nov07) my server has been failing on POP3 pickups from PlusNet (other pickups OK). I'm getting a stream of:
Fri 2007-11-16 13:12:33: Waiting for protocol initiation...
Fri 2007-11-16 13:12:54: <-- -ERR AVG POP3 Proxy Server: Cannot connect to the mail server!
Fri 2007-11-16 13:12:54: --> QUIT
I don't see any change on the PN status page, so is anyone else getting this or is it just me?

Hi there,
Can you try diabling AVG and see if you are then able to download your email?
That's normally the cause of the problem.

Hmmph. Thanks James, I guess it must be a problem on my server. I've got AVG Server running on it incl its pop3 proxy, with MDaemon doing the pickups. Other POP3 sessions are working fine - it's just the ones to mail.plus.net that are giving the error (after long pauses).
I'm investigating now. Fri afternoon nonsense 😞

James or other PlusNet staff...
After checking logs I see I'm getting the following:
16.11.2007 13:47:40 AutoPOP3(10110): Connection from process 632
16.11.2007 13:47:40 AutoPOP3(10110): Connection from 127.0.0.1:1448
16.11.2007 13:47:40 AutoPOP3(10110): Client connected
16.11.2007 13:48:03 AutoPOP3(10110): Cannot connect to mail.plus.net:110
16.11.2007 13:48:03 AutoPOP3(10110): Connect: A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond. (10060)
16.11.2007 13:48:03 AutoPOP3(10110): Client disconnected
for any attempt at POP3 connections to PlusNet since about 11:30 this morning. Connections to other POP servers in the UK and USA are OK - it's just when I try mail.plus.net.
Don't suppose anything changed at your end this morning? New kit or config or something?
Now wondering whether I should raise a ticket for this rather than use a forum thread.

What happens if you try a telnet?
Open a command prompt and enter:-
telnet mail.plus.net 110

Tried the telnet:
Connecting To mail.plus.net...Could not open connection to the host, on port 110: Connect failed
I get that from my server and from a no-security win2k laptop I've just started up for testing.
The laptop is only connected to a Draytek (set to allow port 110) so I'm going to power it off/on to see if that makes a diff.

Very strange. Had to reboot the router 3 times to get a working connection to PlusNet. First two times it seemed to be connected but only the gateway address was pingable.
Anyway, it's back on now... server (with AVG pop3 proxy server running) is happy now - POP3 pickups from mail.plus.net are working OK.
Turn it off and back on again is always a good rule!
