Re: Pings and Gaming and Dissconnects

Hi KingPenguinUK,
I've ordered a replacement router for you to see if that sorts it, it should be with you by the end of the week. Hope that solves the problem for you.

Re: Pings and Gaming and Dissconnects

Wow thanks Smiley I'll let you know how I get on, hopefully its just a fault with this router. If not I'm not sure what it could be... the old speedtouch I used was non-wireless one, could It be the fact this router has wireless built in be sending some feedback down the line itself? causing this noise etc?
My concern is that I get this replacement router and that does the same too, then I'm stuck as to solving this, do I spend money on a new modem/router from another source and find that does the same thing? or just go back to the old speedtouch and then buy a separate router for the wireless side of things.

Re: Pings and Gaming and Dissconnects

I know of no reason why wireless should feed back onto the line unless the router is faulty. My TG585v8 does not cause hissing on the line; present up time is 67 days.
If you connect to your current router using a cable you could try turning wireless off - if you hold in the button on the front for a few seconds it toggles wireless off and on.
Rather than worrying about problems that hopefully will not be there let's see how you get on with the replacement router. Smiley

Re: Pings and Gaming and Dissconnects

Wondering if any plusnet support reading this could check my line... some reason I'm barely getting 1mb connection tonight and its making gaming on-line dreadful Sad
I did a BT Speedtest
Quote
Download speedachieved during the test was - 902 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 400-2000 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :2528 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 2000 Kbps

My IP profile is lower than it usually is too, normally that's been around 3700Kbps
Edit: Getting tired of this now, been kicked 3-4 times tonight from servers either because I have a high ping or I lose connection to the server.... its getting beyond a joke now.

Re: Pings and Gaming and Dissconnects

Our logs are showing you as being online for over 3 days now, though looking through the profile history on BTs side of things the profile was last at 3000 on the 15th and unfortunately there have been several drops since then (looks like those happened on Sunday evening):

Other than the usual wiring and master socket checks there's not really much we can recommend for the moment I'm afraid.

Re: Pings and Gaming and Dissconnects

I think that sunday was when I was trying all the different solutions out for the background noise on my line, so I was changing the routers around and disconnecting a lot.
Take it the IP profile should increase after a couple days of normal use and no disconnects?

Re: Pings and Gaming and Dissconnects

It certainly should, yes - might speed things up if you resync the connection once a day around lunchtime if possible (disconnect via router interface, unplug/power off, plug back in/power up after 30 secs, reconnect).

Re: Pings and Gaming and Dissconnects

Well my new router that Matt kindly sent out arrived yesterday, Set it up following the book provided and its still doing the same thing as the last router, It still gives off noise down the line. Also I have a mate who's in a different block that has same router as me (since he's with plusnet) and I hooked a phone up to his line and yes his has noise down it too.
Also when I was changing the router over I double checked with my phone and yes the line was perfectly quiet without the modem connected.
Also did some more ping tests and still the first hop to the router/modem is very high 99-100ms when it should be below 10ms.
Not sure what else to do, I do need an N wireless router for my TV/Blueray system so I'm going to buy one this week see how that goes.

Re: Pings and Gaming and Dissconnects

Have you asked for them to get an Openreach engineer to investigate the line noise ?
As you said, you got a fault (just like me, same rubbish, despite me being on fibre).... As the fault has occured for me since having FTTC activated, then its PN i have to go through to arrange for them to get BT to look into my fault....
If they wont fix the fault, or provide a QoS , then theres always another action Smiley

When you swapped routers did you also swap the DSL cable from the router to the filter, and the filter as well?

Re: Pings and Gaming and Dissconnects

@Stuart. There's nothing wrong with the line, If i have no modem connected then the line is perfectly silent, Soon as this Thompson router connects to ADSL there's noise on the line. I've tried an old Speedtouch I have from when I first joined Plusnet in 2009 but its a non-wireless one and with that one connected its a perfectly quiet line. So its something to do with this make of router. I think i've pretty much ruled out the line being the problem.
@Jaggies, Yes swapped everything, Power supply, Cat5 cable, Filters and ADSL cable, swapped everything

Re: Pings and Gaming and Dissconnects

Well got a new router since I needed to anyway to get N wireless in my room.
Its fixed one problems, I don't get any more high pings on the first hop (ie PC to router) when tracert to a IP.
But the noise is still on the line but I think this is the Wireless feeding back of some sort. Maybe the filter isn't that great with a wireless router.
Edit: with the new router I take it DSL setting should be on Multimode (Or do I select ADSL2 or 2+ etc?) and VC Setting should be LLC? (or VC)

Re: Pings and Gaming and Dissconnects

Well the new router has improved my on-line experience, Ping times are a lot better and not been disconnected much, thought I'll give it a good test this weekend.
As for the background noise down the line when a wireless router is connected I've still not solved, I have a new ADSL filter from ADSL Nation coming, going to see if that helps (its meant to be the best on the market)
