Ping times?

Hi all
When I do a speed test with the BT Beta tester of Ookla I get a ping of 39ms, now my DL is Interleaved (depth 16).  Is 39ms about right for this situation?
I have pinged some UK based sites and they return a similar time but at the moment anything in the USA varies from 95ms to >170ms, so is there an issue for sites across the pond tonight or is this 'normal'???

Re: Ping times?

Better to use dos ping or tracing tool, the bt tester is not reliable for ping results.  As to the ping to the US of A, yes that is normal, at best you should see around 100ms from an external ping trace to a US server and add on 15-20 for the actual in game ping.

Re: Ping times?

On Windows pathping is the best bet.

Re: Ping times?

Thanks both  Smiley
So 39ms is about right for my "connection" for UK sites, yes? NB I do not game online but always hope my connection is up to good standard  Undecided Wink
As for ping method, I used the ping command in W7 DOS CMD window.

What results did you get from the speed tests just out of interest? I'd say from looking at the results of a line check that I've just performed that 39ms is not unreasonable for your line IMHO.

Re: Ping times?

Hi Adam
FWIW I still find it hard to appreciate that with sync of 3755 and the 88.2% of sync IP at 3.31 why my measured speed (depending on the test tool) barely gets above 3Mbps i.e. why the heck is it not rountinely closer to the IP figure!!!  There being very little difference based on the time of day so by inference exchange contention & network congestion are not obviously a factor or are they based on the info I have given???
NB Just to mention in case it has any relevence, I am on a Legacy Product Premier Option 1 and my usage is primarily ~ surfing, email, VPN during office hours though that can go up to say 9pm sometimes, limited amount of FTP and likewise not a lot of streaming. Considering switching Plusnet Extra Pro as that will save me money especially being on a Market 2 exchange......................so in the same respect would the newer package have an impact performance wise???
So sorry for the delay but I did some tests as below on the 17th July and the 18th July for your perusal and many thanks in advance for your insight & guidance:-

Re: Ping times?

It's good to see that your line is performing close to the 3312kbps IP profile, I can't be sure as to why it's a little under that at present though.

Our products should have no bearing over your throughput speed so I'd not consider that to be a factor at all.

Has the latency improved since you first posted as I'd expect a little better than 39ms on a 3.1mb connection.

Re: Ping times?

Routefinder: How far are you from London - that is most likely to be the most significant factor affecting your latency.
Adam: When you do a Windows ping the size of the packet sent and returned on the line is 74 bytes. On a 256kbps up and down line that packet will take less than 2ms to be sent in each direction and that is only the handful of kilometres at most to the exchange. From the exchange to your gateways the speed will be the same (regardless of the users connection speed) and unless the user lives in East London that will be a considerably greater distance. The maximum difference in latency between a line with a sync of 256kbps and one with a sync of 24Mbps (on the same exchange) is going to be 4ms.

Re: Ping times?

Hi both
Adam ~ I will do a few pings over the next day or so and post the results including the location pinged.  As for the performance....................well its lower than "close' to the IP is not "at present" it has effectively always been like that since going 21CN.  I think under 20CN the two figures were much closer together???
Jelv ~ as the crow flies I am about 20 miles from London as we are in Surrey.  AFAIK my connection goes via a main point (PoP) in Reading Berkshire
