Ping & Upload prpblems - test please

I am a very lucky guy who has had a stable ping of around 50 & upload of 0.35 for many years.  Last couple of days this has gone up to at least 250 (sometimes 100) & down to 0.1.  Downloads are "lumpy" but not the major problem.  Is it possible to test the line without going through the step by step checks (test socket is in an awkward place, no spare filters or alternative router (Bipac 7800N).  Trying to work from home but just unusable.  My username is roberts6

Many, many thanks

Re: Ping & Upload prpblems - test please

Jelv, apologies my frustration got to me.  Hope the following is what is required

DMT Status No Defect
Operational Mode ADSL2+
Upstream 444
Downstream 15447
SNR Margin(Upstream) 29.6
SNR Margin(Downstream) 3.3
Line Attenuation(Upstream) 14.3
Line Attenuation(Downstream) 25.5

2) BT Speedtest
1. Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
Download  Speed
0.3 Mbps

0 Mbps 21 Mbps
Max Achievable Speed
Download speedachieved during the test was - 0.3 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 4 Mbps-21 Mbps.
IP Profile for your line is - 13.63 Mbps
2. Upstream Test:  -provides background information.

0.01 Mbps

0 Mbps 0.45 Mbps
Max Achievable Speed
Upload speed achieved during the test was - 0.01Mbps
Additional Information:
Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 0.45 Mbps

This test was not conclusive and further testing is required. This might be useful for your Broadband Service Provider to investigate the fault.
3) Current Line speed
Estimated line speed:

Re: Ping & Upload prpblems - test please

Everything looks right except for the actual speeds.
Are you connected to the router wired or wireless? If it's wireless could you repeat the speed test wired please.

Re: Ping & Upload prpblems - test please

Hi there,
As jelv says, it does all look correct (except for the speed test result) - though I've bumped your profile on our side from 13400 to 13600 to match the one on BTs side. We could do with uncapping the upstream as well, but that probably is best left until after the speed's improved - guessing a router reboot doesn't improve anything?

Re: Ping & Upload prpblems - test please

Many thanks to you both for such a quick response.  A reboot sometimes appears to improve things for a while but no real difference today.  I will try the wired approach & report back (getting similar stats from several different wireless devices)

Re: Ping & Upload prpblems - test please

Unfortunately wired made no difference

Is there anything else that can be done or do I need to get hold of a spare router ?

Re: Ping & Upload prpblems - test please

Probably worth testing with another one if you have one already or can borrow one, but don't go and buy a new one just to test with. Also though if you could go back to the BT speed tester and try to get invited in to perform the TAP3 test - you may need to run one more (TAP2) before it'll let you but with those results once TAP2 is done you should get invited to TAP3. Once we have those, please finish running through the wizard at http://faults.plus.net and paste those results into the comments box at the end (along with confirming you've run the TAP3 test) and our team will be able to get this sorted out for you.

Re: Ping & Upload prpblems - test please

Logged on to the BT Speedtest through the speedtest@speedtest_domain logon (hopefully if I folowed the instructions correctly) I acheived much better result (although upstream still look appalling)

Re: Ping & Upload prpblems - test please

Matt, I know it doesn't make sense normally, but I'd be tempted to uncap the upload to see if that unlocks anything.

Re: Ping & Upload prpblems - test please

Having played around & rebooted more times than is probably sensible, I can confirm that a reboot does sort the problem but only for about 60 seconds (during which time I get a ping & upload just like in the stable times).  Have borrowed a home hub 2 & filter from a friend & get the same results as with the Billion 7800N.  I have redone the BT Speedtest which shown below for the wired Home Hub, feels strange to me that BT Wholesale consider this upload speed acceptable
1. Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
Download Speed
10.78 Mbps
0 Mbps 21 Mbps
Max Achievable Speed
Download speed achieved during the test was - 10.78 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 4 Mbps-21 Mbps.
IP Profile for your line is - 13.17 Mbps
2. Upstream Test: -provides background information.
Upload Speed
0.06 Mbps
0 Mbps 0.45 Mbps
Max Achievable Speed
Upload speed achieved during the test was - 0.06Mbps
A dditional Information:
Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 0.45 Mbps
We were unable to identify any performance problem with your service at
this time.

Many thanks in advance.

Re: Ping & Upload prpblems - test please

Maybe I qas a tad hasty last night.  Whilst the BT Speedtester still shows an upload of 0.01 this morning my other speedtests are at normal levels http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3271804274
Matt, would you mind uncapping my upload as suggested by Jelv & over  the next few days I wulll try & work put whether it has been the change of router or a mystry improvement in the line.

Re: Ping & Upload prpblems - test please

A further update.  Although everything appeared fixed on Friday morning, the performance soon deteriorated to the poor levels of the previous week.  However, this afternoon, following the uncapping of the upload speed, everything really does appear to be back to normal with the benefit of upload nearly at 1.00 rather than 0.35

Many thanks to Matt for uncapping & Jelv for being right !
Before the improvement today, I was about to start blaming the Avast anti virus as I had noticed that the iPad speedtest was consistently returning the "required" results where the laptops were not, however there now appears to be no need to investigate further (if it isn't broke don't fix it !)
