Packet loss in evenings, 21CN ADSL

Packet loss in the evenings is making iPlayer etc unwatchable.
The exchange, Mogador (EDIT), was upgraded to 21CN in mid November 2013.
I have noticed this happening for the last few evenings, it is happening on both IPv4 & IPv6 traffic (I am taking part in the IPv6 trial).
It is also a problem for one of my neighbours who is also with Plusnet.
It was also showing up on the TBB graphs when I was away for a few days last week.
What could be causing this, exchange congestion? If so how do I go about getting it reported to BTw?
Can anyone suggest other possibilities?

Exchange is Mogador, LSMOG. Not on the list.

Re: Packet loss in evenings, 21CN ADSL

Are you on definitely on 21CN?
Samknows says your exchange is not upgraded to 21CN yet (end of Jan 2014) - http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange/LSMOG
The PN Exchange Checker for 20CN shows capacity problems - http://usertools.plus.net/exchanges/?exchange=Mogador&exact=672&plugin=vp It also shows your exchange is 21CN enabled (http://usertools.plus.net/exchanges/?exchange=Mogador&exact=672), so if it is and you've not been moved over to 21CN already, PN should be able to sort that out for you which should hopefully fix your problems.
When an exchange is due to be upgraded shortly to 21CN, BT tend to not put in capacity upgrades for 20CN because it will be redundant when people are moved across.
Edit: Sorry...read a previous thread where you were moved to 21CN already. In that case, it's over to PN. Seems like another exchange with capacity problems.

Yes, I am on 21CN, Samknows is out of date.
I was moved across to 21CN in mid November.

Capacity problem at the exchange is my best guess. I was just wanting to get a second opinion in case someone could think of another reason.

The timing seems to indicate that and the fact that a neighbour also has the same problem seems to add further weight to it.

Re: Packet loss in evenings, 21CN ADSL

You could check the DSL stats to see if there are enough CRC errors to account for the packet loss.

Re: Packet loss in evenings, 21CN ADSL

Reset counters at approx. 20:30 last night. Figures from Routerstats.
Does not look to me like there are enough CRC errors to account for the packet loss.
Total Uptimes (From SF counts):
WAN:   0 days, 13:21:40
LAN:   0 days, 00:00:00

CRC:            225             0
ES:             213             6
SES:            0               0
UAS:            0               0
LOS:            0               0
LOF:            0               0
Still getting the packet loss in the evenings.

Re: Packet loss in evenings, 21CN ADSL

How bad to speeds get during the periods of severe packet loss? Have you tried running the BT Speed Tester, the Further Diagnostics and the further test (TAP3) is the results are below the acceptable level?
It's probably also worth raising a fault ticket so it's logged.

It is not a speed problem as such but the packet loss makes it impossible to watch iPlayer etc.

Re: Packet loss in evenings, 21CN ADSL

Hi,
Just had a look at this with Dave and the exchange is showing packet loss at the same times shown on your graph so it's looking very much like a fault at the exchange. We've got two faults raised on the exchange already and now we have yours as well so we'll pass this on and keep you posted. I'll pop an update on the fault ticket for you as well.
EDIT: There's a hot VP at the exchange, that'll be what's causing it. It'll get upgraded/fixed at some point, but unfortunately we've no date as yet. The more faults we get (or more correctly our suppliers get) raised on this exchange, the more likely it is to be done sooner, but if we raised it to them as a fault at the exchange it'd get blamed on the VP so I'm afraid doing that wouldn't really help things on I'm afraid.

Re: Packet loss in evenings, 21CN ADSL

Many thanks for the update, will let my neighbour know.
She was waiting for me to find out where the problem was before reporting it.
Will tell her not to bother raising a separate ticket.

Re: Packet loss in evenings, 21CN ADSL

Exchange Status Checker is showing: 20CN virtual paths: Amber
I am on 21CN so did not think this would impact my connection.
