PPP connection died bang on 12am

Has anyone else just had this happen to them? Do I suspect some maintenance is taking place that no-one thought to tell us about?

Hi
I had the same problem.

Re: PPP connection died bang on 12am

I had the same thing happen last night. Went to check emails before going to bed and no connection. Connected to the internet but not to PlusNet, with authentication constantly failing after midnight.
Looks like it came back at 2.35 am from my router logs.

Re: PPP connection died bang on 12am

Hi guys,
It looks like we were informed at about 9pm yesterday via email from BT that there was an emergency outage last night on the 21CN platform.
I'm sorry for the disruption to your service and am glad that it came back later on that night/morning.

Re: PPP connection died bang on 12am

I was using that connection - failed at about 00:17 according to my router.
Eventually, I was given the "BT holding pages"
What was the nature of the "Emergency outage"?
It wasn't just a minute or two.
The Sheffield based CSR told me that five prior people had called to report this fault from the London area.
This was within 15 minutes of the fault occurring.

Re: PPP connection died bang on 12am

Actually - Ignore me, the outage notification that I'm referring to, only applies to the ordering system, which was resolved at approx 7:30am.
Which means that I've got no indication of a general service outage from BT.  Unless it was related to their backend systems (Eco Plus) which seems unlikely.

Re: PPP connection died bang on 12am

Well I'm in London too, so that certainly ties in with what Evil said. I didn't bother phoning in because I've known 21CN maintenance to kill my connection at 12am on the dot before, so I figured it was most likely to be that again, but I am nonetheless a bit annoyed that my connection disappeared from under my feet (well, mouse cursor) with nary a warning - although I accept it seems it's not PN's fault for not warning us.
On a related note by the way, this was my first port-of-call last night and it would appear to need some updating.

Re: PPP connection died bang on 12am

London too for me.
This is when it went down: Tue, 2009-08-18 00:01:21 - LCP down.
And it took a few goes to settle once it was up again:
Tue, 2009-08-18 02:14:32 - Initialize LCP.
Tue, 2009-08-18 02:14:32 - LCP is allowed to come up.
Tue, 2009-08-18 02:14:47 - CHAP authentication success
Tue, 2009-08-18 02:24:55 - Initialize LCP.
Tue, 2009-08-18 02:24:55 - LCP is allowed to come up.
Tue, 2009-08-18 02:25:09 - CHAP authentication success
Tue, 2009-08-18 02:35:17 - Initialize LCP.
Tue, 2009-08-18 02:35:17 - LCP is allowed to come up.
Tue, 2009-08-18 02:35:18 - CHAP authentication success
Didn't boher ringing as suspected it would be back by morning.

Re: PPP connection died bang on 12am

So they have insufficient redundancy in the London area.
Since the dastardly plan appears to be to move voice over to 21CN one day,
I think that BT will have to spend a lot more money on reliability.
I rebooted my router last night - and this morning - lost 200Kbps in sync = 500Kbps in profile.
Thanks a bundle.

Re: PPP connection died bang on 12am

It certainly is the case that my connection's gone down for maintenance - scheduled or unscheduled - noticeably more frequently than it did before moving to 21CN.

Re: PPP connection died bang on 12am

Plusnet raised a ticket for me and closed it straightaway!
Despite knowing the problem affected multiple people:-
Quote
Dear Mr Boden,
Please try removing your username and password from your connection hardware and re-entering these ensuring they are correct. If you still continue to receive username/password errors please follow the following advice.
So that we can further investigate your issue and get this resolved as quickly as possible, can you please try connecting to the internet with the following 2 test logins.
You will need to change the username and password in your connection settings to each of the following test logins, then try connecting.
Once you have tried both test logins, then put your own account details back into the connection and test connecting with your own login details.
If the problem continues, then if you could please reply to this ticket confirming if any of the test logins worked.
Test 1
Username: bt_test@startup_domain
Password: testing
Test 2
Username: bt_test_user@
Password: testing
Kind regards,

I know he was following the script and it was quite late, but Crazy

Same here  seems unfair somehow, When one's connection goes down with or without warning. DLM "thinks" it's instability and lowers Speed and raises your SNR
I say bring on the fiber and loose the "fruit and Nut" (copper & DLM)
