Outgoing mail problems

I've just received a warning that an email I sent yesterday has been delayed for more than 24 hours. Thing is I've sent emails to the same person today and he's received them.
This message was created automatically by mail delivery software.
A message that you sent has not yet been delivered to one or more of its
recipients after more than 24 hours on the queue on pih-relay04.plus.net.
The message identifier is:    1LHLF0-0004Pa-Rx
The date of the message is:    Mon, 29 Dec 2008 16:45:05 +0000
The subject of the message is: Re: xxxxxxx
The address to which the message has not yet been delivered is:
pqr@stu.com
No action is required on your part. Delivery attempts will continue for
some time, and this warning may be repeated at intervals if the message
remains undelivered. Eventually the mail delivery software will give up,
and when that happens, the message will be returned to you.

Is anyone else seeing problems?

Re: Outgoing mail problems

Hi
I used to get them emails when I'm sending to ppl with full mailboxes. but tried to telnet to the mail server for stu.com and send a test email:
Quote
220 radix.sorted.org ESMTP Postfix
helo XXXXXXXXXX.plus.com
250 radix.sorted.org
mail from: ABCXYZ@gmail.com
250 Ok
rcpt to: pqr@stu.com
550 <pqr@stu.com>: Recipient address rejected: User unknown in virtual alias table
quit
221 Closing connection. Good bye.
Connection to host lost.

the user [pqr] you are trying to send the email to, might have changed his mailbox, deleted, renamed it or just removed the alias...etc
it's nice that the relay server is retrying until retry times out in [not a valid alias] case. retry times out usually in either 48 or 72 hours

Re: Outgoing mail problems

I can categorically state that the recipient does not have a problem. The email concerned was very small with no attachments and I've since successfully sent him mail with large attachments so it's not a full mailbox situation. I've spoken to him this morning and it's still not arrived.
What is the frequency of the retries?

I don't think the retries are at entirely fixed intervals jelv i.e. they start quite close together and the time between attempts gradually increases until a time when the server will give up and you'll receive a permanent bounce. I can find out the specifics the next time I'm in the office if you like as I'm not sure of them off the top of my head?

It's definitely not a full mailbox situation, the mail server for that domain is reporting that pqr is not valid. best thing to do is to ask him to contact his domain host or email admin.

Pass
No idea what the frequency have been set to, could be part of the relay servers configuration
