OpenDNS problem

Hello. I apologize if this has been asked before.
I have a technicolor 582n router. I can successfully change the dns server to OpenDNS servers using telnet and all will work well for a couple of days. However, for some reason plusnets servers get automatically added back on to the server list which allows all content on the internet to be viewed.
The metric value for the OpenDNS servers are 0, and the ones that get automatically added are 10. Not sure if that means anything!
Any idea on what I can do?
Thank you

Re: OpenDNS problem

Hi there,
I've just run this past a member of our products team and we can't think of an obvious reason why that might not happen.
With the metric value at 0 OpenDNS should be prioritissed.
You might want to try the following commands to flush DNS, set Open DNS as primary then ours or which ever preferred DNS as secondary. We have a test router set up in precisely that manner here and we haven't seen it revert it's settings or fall back to secondary DNS:
:dns server forward dnsset flush
:dns server forward dnsset add set=0 dns=208.67.222.123 metric=0 intf=Internet
:dns server forward dnsset add set=0 dns=208.67.220.123 metric=0 intf=Internet
Let us know how you get on.
Adam

Re: OpenDNS problem

Hi VickyA1975
I had a similar issue
what I done was to restore to factory settings then
FlushDNS
dns server forward dnsset flush
See the router to use http://npr.me.uk/telnet.html by our resident npr

Keep in mind you'd have to re-enter any other settings you've done via telnet commands if you do that @VickyA1975

Re: OpenDNS problem

I have the same issue, this occurs each time my router gets a new ip or when i disconnect/reconnect.
Would a static ip address solve this problem ?

I can't see how having a dynamic IP would cause this so for that reason I can't imagine that would fix such an issue.

EDIT:
Just a thought VickyA1975 and 11110_110
if you see this happen again mind checking via Telnet to see if the settings have also changed in there?
Drop us a reply if you get the chance to do that please as it would be useful for our products guys to know.

Re: OpenDNS problem

...forgive me for asking the obvious too...
Is what is being seen here simply the PN DHCP assigned DNS servers being added to the DNS server list when the PPP session is (re)established?

Re: OpenDNS problem

I would, however as of 2 things, would not prove a conclusive result
As per my other thread, I have for the foreseeable future
1. returned back to PlusNets DNS for testing (as per Matt Turner's request)
2. I am on a different Firmware to you
Re: OpenDNS problem

Yes DHCP has re-issued the plusnet dns-servers.

2. I am on a different Firmware to you

The same applies to the V8 firmware as well - see table above the direct link I gave.  I see no means of telling the router to ignore the DHCP configured DNS servers in a fashion similar to that on a PC NIC configuration - irrespective of firmware versions.  If there is a means, may be someone could point us all to it?
I suggest that the flush and add commands clear out ALL DNS server entries and then insert just the ones you want.  When the PPP session is lost and re-established, the (PN) DHCP server sends updated DNS settings (remember different gateways advertise different DNS servers in different orders) which are ADDED to the current list.

Re: OpenDNS problem

This method of changing the routers dns settings does not suffer from the plusnet dns creep.
http://npr.me.uk/changedns.html ; method 2)

If anyone wishes to experiment, the following commands appear to stop the plusnet dns creep.
I would have expected the primdns and secdns ip addresses to actually be assigned as dns servers but it appears that's not the case. In my tests any IP other than the default 0.0.0.0 stops the ISP's dns from being picked up during ppp renewal. In short I haven't a clue what's happening so use the following commands at your own risk. Wink
Quote
ppp ifdetach intf=Internet
ppp ifconfig intf=Internet primdns=0.0.0.2 secdns=0.0.0.3
ppp ifattach intf=Internet
saveall

To return to default:
Quote
ppp ifdetach intf=Internet
ppp ifconfig intf=Internet primdns=0.0.0.0 secdns=0.0.0.0
ppp ifattach intf=Internet
saveall

I've applied that npr, I'll keep an eye on it and get back to you with my findings.
Many thanks.
