Ongoing Intermittent Issues

Hello All,

Since having plusnet installed at our new house we have been having intermittent spikes in latency. These are not happening at consistent times of the day or on any particular day but can occur at any time and last from around a minute to well over 30 minutes and persists through power cycling the router.
We tried as many things as we could before submitting tickets to plusnet and now am needing some clarification as to what plusnet are saying as well as trying to fix the issue.

What happens is that that pages will stop loading (or take up to 10 seconds to load, google.co.uk for example), if anyone is gaming their latency will increase up to several thousand ms or they will just be disconnected. The connection will remain like this and then clear up of its own accord. We have seen this happening from 7am in the morning through to near midnight (maybe happening all the time but we are asleep so do not know).

I was going to try to use TBB BQM to keep an eye on the connection but the ICMP is disabled/blocked on the router from plusnet, and while I found a way around it it requires me to flash the router to force config changes and I do not which to do that unless I have no other options.

I have been running pings & tracert's when the issues occur which typically come back like this (not posting ping as it does not show much info);

16/7 @ 9.18am
  1     4 ms     4 ms     5 ms  dsldevice.lan [192.168.1.254]

16/7 @ 00.04 am
  1     3 ms     3 ms     3 ms  dsldevice.lan [192.168.1.254]
  2  1702 ms   160 ms    38 ms  lo0-central10.ptw-ag04.plus.net [195.166.128.194]
  3   966 ms  1092 ms  1131 ms  link-a-central10.ptw-gw01.plus.net [212.159.2.156]
  4  1485 ms  1883 ms  2351 ms  xe-7-2-0.ptw-cr01.plus.net [212.159.0.252]
  5   113 ms    38 ms    38 ms  72.14.222.97
  6   676 ms   919 ms  1009 ms  72.14.232.219
  7  1233 ms  1698 ms  2041 ms  216.239.57.119
  8   296 ms   101 ms   102 ms  lhr25s02-in-f99.1e100.net [216.58.213.99]

When the are no issues with the network the tracert looks like this

  1     4 ms     4 ms     3 ms  dsldevice.lan [192.168.1.254]
  2    42 ms    38 ms    38 ms  lo0-central10.ptw-ag04.plus.net [195.166.128.194
]
  3    39 ms    40 ms    38 ms  link-a-central10.ptw-gw01.plus.net [212.159.2.15
6]
  4    38 ms    38 ms    37 ms  xe-7-2-0.ptw-cr01.plus.net [212.159.0.252]
  5    38 ms    37 ms    38 ms  ae1.pcl-cr01.plus.net [195.166.129.1]
  6    42 ms    38 ms    39 ms  ae2.pcl-cr02.plus.net [195.166.129.7]
  7    38 ms    38 ms    38 ms  ggc02.plus.net [212.56.71.165]

When I have been running these tracert's I am connected via ethernet cable to the router (2704n) which is, as it should be, connected to the master socket.

I have been in touch via the ticket system but as an authorised user instead of account owner have not linked it to this thread yet, the latest plus.net support said is it is an "internal" issue; which puzzles me as the RTT to the router is 4ms. Anyone able to explain or offer any help?

Re: Ongoing Intermittent Issues

To hazard a guess it's probably related to this https://community.plus.net/t5/Fibre-Broadband/DNS-Routing-issues-for-the-last-36-hours/td-p/1348275.  Don't think it's related to Fibre only.  Could potentially affect anyone on the 'new' network.

Behaviour for me is:

Some traffic works, some doesn't (Xbox One, Work VPN rubbish, Youtube buffering lots)
Some web sites fail to load occasionally, others are absolutely fine!
6% packet loss when pinging web sites such as BBC news

It's been on going over a week now.  Plusnet seem not be able to fix it!

Re: Ongoing Intermittent Issues

Thanks for the heads up about that, my issues predate the last 2 weeks though (was installed at the end of March) also forgot to say on adsl network. Am trying to exhaust every possible option while I investigate microwave BB (FTTA) as I live quite far from an exchange.
