Ofcom speed measurements

Ofcom and Samknows are starting a new series of tests and require volunteers
Note it uses about 2Gb up and down per month, and they want people with less than 30 Gb per month
they are after the following ISP's AOL,BT, O2/Be, Orange, Plusnet, Sky, Talktalk or Virgin Media.

Hmm.
We all know that surveys can be somewhat interesting to go by, but I always think that ones that are aimed at practically the whole country, especially where details are required to complete them (rather than just running a little speedtest) are going to be a little sketchy at best.
I also think that it will be rather confusing for a number of people choosing between upto 8/20Mbps and the actual speed we say we think they will be able to get on our website.

I thought I would up there 4 M average a little as I am on an up to 8M  and have a virtually full 8128 synch all the time, 7150 profile, but think for some reason interleaved

I'm fairly sure that if it were "properly" interleaved, you wouldn't be on a 7150Kbps profile as you wouldn't be syncing at the full 8128Kbps.

I think that 8128 is a router thing, some handle the information differently and show the speed you are connected at whilst others will show the maximum speed you can connect at, my old BT home hub would show my connected speed on one page but the max speed on another, if I were to turn interleaving off I would connect at the maximum speed shown (in my case it's 8096 which is rather odd considering my stats 30/9) instead of whatever speed I'm actually connected at, let me see if I can find it.......... nope, can't find the speed I'm connected at on a Buffalo (7,000 profile though, used to be 6,500! :D)

dont think so. the BT test shows synch of 8128 and profile of 7150 as well

I sync at 8128 on a 7150 profile with BT and Plusnet on an interleaved line.
Think it depends on your router chipset and BT exchange DSLAM.

I saw some lines on the DLM trial where routers were showing the line as interleaved but BT showed it as fast path, I think like Fifer says it's all down to the combination of chipsets in the router and DSLAM/MSAN. I didn't do any analysis of it but as we've just started the Annex M trial and chipsets seem to be vital in getting the best performance from a line I might have another look into it.

Regarding the original topic , I signed up for the trials a while back and have just received the hardware today (a nice looking Linksys wireless N router which has been totally reprogrammed).
Will be interesting to see the data it records , which I will be able to view once I receive an email confirming I am now connected.

Well so far I am just going by what I read on the samknows website that says -
"Can Community members see their own individual results?
You know it! Once signed up and operational you will be sent an email with a link to your statistics page. If you don't receive the email, please contact us and we'll sort this out for you."
It then goes on to show a load of screen shots of statistical pages you can view , which yeah I guess are online.
So I imagine you know alot more about it than me as I have not received the email yet so I cannot view anything.
I take it that its not very interesting then?

well it shows you your lowest and highest upload and download over 24 hrs, and graphs them, DNS response time, Web site load, Latency, Packet Loss, and various packet losses

i cant see how the latency can be measured that accrute as i leave spotify on all day long and if it wasnt for netlimiter limiting its upload to 80% of 380kbps then when the testing box sent its hourly ping test out it would be tainted by the upload being maxed out.
any one know if the samknows box is cleaver another to notice the bandwidth is being maxed out and so drops the tainted latency result.
thoe i was impressed when the 21cn latency issue appeared and untill one of the samknows tester's checked the graphs and noticed to that at midnight the latency shot up i would of probally still to this day bein trying to get people to belive it was more than just my line/exchange
