Non Plusnet Router Instal

Hi
I have a Voyager 105 USB ADSL modem on a Windows XP system.
I want to connect to a wired router for a Homeplug set up to also use my Vista o/s laptop.
I have two wired routers available to me, a NetgearDG834 with modem, or a Netgear RP614.
How do I connect?  Do I use the existing Usb modem and get a female usb/ethernet conversion plug?
Do I use the computer ethernet connection to the modem router, and if so how do I set up the modem, configuration?
How do I configure the Vista laptop which has an internal modem?
I tried connecting the Voyager to the laptop for a direct internet connection just to  download a firewall and anti virus but the Voyager set up would not download, not Vista friendly perhaps as it's an old modem.
Should I be trying to configure the laptop modem instead, and if so how?

Lots of questions there. Cheesy
Any help appreciated.
Thanks
Eric

Re: Non Plusnet Router Instal

PJ is correct - the homeplug is effectively a method of extending an Ethernet cable via the mains wiring. Plug the devices at both ends up as though you were connecting them directly via an Ethernet cable. Just to elaborate on what PJ said about modems - I think oblomov you're confusing a built in conventional modem with a broadband modem - they are very different! Don't try to connect the RJ11 modem socket on your laptop to anything remotely associated with ADSL routers!

4. Type 192.168.0.1 into your web browser (or click on this link)

I've followed the instructions to here and clicked the link but then I get a Netgear pages which state the  message that 'this URL is not supported/recognised by netgear' and a link to netgear support.
So presently I can connect to the internet via the router but the connection is not properly configured as it stops half way through the set up wizard.
Further help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Re: Non Plusnet Router Instal

Eric - can you elaborate please. You say you click the link and then get themessage, but further on you say it stops "half way through the setup wizard".  Can you say exactly what happens when you get the link - what pages do you see, what details do you put in etc. (Obviously I'm not suggesting you post your actual username and password!)

Re: Non Plusnet Router Instal

Are you using the NetgearDG834?
Is it new and unused?
You don't have to use the "wizard" to do a basic setup.
It should ask for a user name - answer "admin"
Password is "password" (without the quotes!)

Thank you for your replies both of which were helpful.
The unit is new but I failed to install the first time after nearly completing the whole process manually.
This is a second attempt and pressing re-set has helped however I'm now using the wizard and the wizard is asking me for:-
IP address - 192.168.0.1 ?
IP Subnet Mask?
Gateway IP Address?
Primary DNS 212.159.13.49 ?
Secondary DNS 212.159.50 ?
I can't proceed without completing all these
Also I'm unsure of
VPI identifier and VCI parammeters?
Multiplexing method
Host and Domain names, (unsure of what this means)
ISP domain name server DNS address
Fixed or static IP address (server assigned?)
Much of this info seems not specified on the Plus Net page for manual configuration.
Thanks

Re: Non Plusnet Router Instal

Take the values from the screenshots (attached) - these include extra info that is optional (and not required).

Re: Non Plusnet Router Instal

Thank you all for your help.  I'm up and running now, eventually had to complete the instal manually which I could not have done without your help.
Thanks once again for your trouble. Grin

All you have to now is to change your password on the router from "password".  Smiley
