Noise Margin expectations?

Hi
I have followed a number of threads with interest and now started experimenting with trying to improve my line speed.
I have a Netgear DG834 which at the moment, is plugged into the BT master socket via a filter into which there is also plugged one hardwired phone on a short cable. This is for testing purposes only and normally there is a filtered NT5 faceplate with some extensions attached as well.
I have routerstats running and would like some help in interpreting the results. The main puzzle is the noise margin which is jumping around like mad. A few days ago it was bouncing around between 3db and 1db (occasionally 0db). Then mysteriously, it improved to bouncing around between 9 or 10db and 5 or 6db. Since then, I changed the wiring to as I describe above. I now have noise margin readings that go 9,8,9,8,5,9,5,3,8 in successive readings. So the change to the master socket has made no difference. Upstream Noise margin is a steady 19db. Receive Synch speed is currently 3712kbps but it will not stay there - this morning it was 2900kbps for instance.
Looking at the bits/tone graph, there are what I think are a lot of bit swops registered on some tones. On successive readings, there have been 10 to 20 bit swaps over the last few minutes.
OK, I am happy with 3712, I do live some way from the exchange, but I would like it to stay there. I think that means getting the noise margin to be stable, at 9 say, (then let it reduce as the speed increases even further Cool )
Should the noise margin leap around like mine is?
If not, what does anyone suggest I do to get it improved - (careful reading of the above will suggest that my internal wiring makes no difference - so its BT who might do something)
Any comments or suggests gratefully received
Jim

Re: Noise Margin expectations?

The noise margin shouldn't jump around. However if you resynched the router in the middle of the day the noise margin can drop by 2 to 3 dB after dark.
Can you post a picture of the noise margin fluctuation from Routerstats (select additional options under the post to add a picture) and also the full stats from the router - select telnet router in routerstats and then Summary - you can either copy and paste or ad the information as a picture

Re: Noise Margin expectations?

I'll do this bit by bit. First the noise margin graph.

Re: Noise Margin expectations?

That is absolutely awful - have you tried the quiet line test - dial 17070 option 2

Re: Noise Margin expectations?

Compare my stats
Note similar speeds but much higher attenuation - you have a major noise problem

Re: Noise Margin expectations?

with an atten off 43db. if you had a stable 6db noise margin you could squeeze  out around 6304kbps sync rate.
info taken from here http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/max_speed_calc.php
thats some serious noise you have there

i would give that ago
post back with what you hear or dont hear and the guys will tell you how to log this with your line rental provider if you need to.
the main thing if you do have noise on your phone service is dont say anything about broadband Wink

Re: Noise Margin expectations?

Well, I have tried the quiet line test - its a bit hard as I do not know what to expect but it seemed pretty quiet to me. If I listened very hard there was a just discernible crackle in the background but in a telephone conversation it would never be heard. So I think the system passed that test.
I guess thats the wrong answer!!

Re: Noise Margin expectations?

Yes - wired exactly as described in the first post all of the time.

Re: Noise Margin expectations?

Well - I have downloaded the programme and it runs but it does not seem to like my modem. When I do a refesh, it says
Error: get not enough data/ too many errors : Connection was disconnected
I selected Annex A at the start (POTS - not ISDN). I wonder if it can cope with my modem - it is one of the original version 1 ones - so is there any special settings I need?

Re: Noise Margin expectations?

Investigating further - the modem and programme to talk but the programme wants a file called adslctl that my modem denies all knowledge of.
