Thinking of getting my own wireless router as I want dual band and media sharing via a USB port. Is it a "better" solution to have a separate modem and router or just stick with a combined unit?
Any suggestions?

A combined unit is neater and should save a little energy.
A combined unit will cost you more ~ probably quite a bit more.
Some people have reported lower sync speeds with combined units: must depend on the unit and on luck.
You'll have more choice on a separate router.
With separate units you can put them in different parts of the house which can be handy: depending on house layout etc.
