New connection running at less than 2Mb, should I worry?

Hi all,
I have just had my connection enabled and, at the moment, I am not living in the house but pop in to reset the router once a day during the 10-day line testing period.  I also check the speed each day and it comes up between 1.5Mb and 2Mb.  I was told I could expect 5-6 but I know the first 10 days does fluctuate.  Is this likely to be the best I can expect, will it improve on its own or is there something I or PN can do?
I can't provide any more info right now (like the sync speed or whatever it is) but if someone can tell me how to get it off the router, I'll look tonight.

This page tells you how to get the stats off a lot of routers:

Re: New connection running at less than 2Mb, should I worry?

Somebody correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the exchange will start with a figure of 2Mb and work up or down from there over the ten days. There probably isn't much point worrying about it until it settles down after the ten days. Post your stats anyway as it should tell us what the likely final speed will be.

Re: New connection running at less than 2Mb, should I worry?

Sometimes it can start at, and be stuck on, 2mbps.
Anyway, both the router stats and a BT Speed Test would be illuminating. Wink

I've just come up with an idea all on my own, I'll get the router stats  Smiley
Do I access the Thompson/Speedtouch TG585v7 by just going to the gateway IP address?

I'm not as truly wise as OJ  Wink
But I'm sat on a brand new ( 6 weeks anyway ) B/B connection to Plusnet land. When this virgin circuit started - it was almost immediately working at 6M  Smiley Smiley
But then we are only about 300 meters from the exchange.

Naah - I just have three short cuts in Firefox - one to my old Speedtouch 585 v6, one to my Netgear DG834G v4 and one to enable debug mode on the Netgear which you need if you want to get any sensible information.
Just copied and pasted the relevant one  Grin

Re: New connection running at less than 2Mb, should I worry?

Hey.
Ok so I got the router stats and they are as follows:
Bandwith: 448 / 8128
Output: 12.0 / 19.5
Line Attenuation: 8.5 / 16.0
SN Margin: 23.0 / 9.0
That seems all good but the speed test I did came back at 1501Kbps
This may be due to a dodgy speed tester as I was using my phone and so had to find one that didn't use JVM plus it was over WiFi though I was right next to the router.  I will try again tomorrow with ethernet and the proper BT speed checker.

That's definitely the one to run, and please quote all the result,

Re: New connection running at less than 2Mb, should I worry?

Those figures are good and I would expect you to get 6000K speeds. One thing that can throttle speeds over wireless is if the MTU on the router is set to smaller than the MTU on the PC. Setting the routers MTU to 1500 (the maximum) may not give you the absolute limit, but it will not be far off. In any case a wired test gives far more reliable results than wireless.
What speed does https://portal.plus.net/my.html?action=stable_rate say?
Please run the BT test http://speedtester.bt.com/ and post back the full results. It can be rather fickle so it may take a few attempts to get it to run.

Re: New connection running at less than 2Mb, should I worry?

Thanks for all the advice.  I've run the BT test but foolishly did it wirelessly!  Here are the results anyway:
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
    Your DSL connection rate: 8128 kbps(DOWN-STREAM),  448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 7150 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 5334 kbps
I will do it again over ethernet later (have to wait 3 hours!) but i'm pretty happy with that.

That's fine anyway; looks like you're sorted.  Cheesy
If any individual PC's perform significantly slower look to wireless issues and/or TCP/RWIN tuning.
