New Fibre Installation - What speed should I expect?

Hi all,
I had Plusnet Fibre (FTTC, Up to 76 Mbps) installed on Monday. The installation did not go smoothly because two days before the installation I lost the dial tone on my line. I assumed this was due to switching the line from Sky to Plusnet, but this is not the case. The Openreach engineer was able to install the new master socket and modem but was unable to fix the dial tone problem, and so booked another engineer to fix the line fault. In the meantime, the fibre worked OK, syncing at around 36 Mbps. I assumed that this would increase after the line was fixed, and on Tuesday the work was carried out and, as of today (Friday), the speed has remained around 36 Mbps.
The IP Profile of the line is 77.44 Mbps, so I am presently at half the speed I thought I would be able to get. I realise that other factors may be at work (distance from the cabinet etc.), but perhaps the work done on the line has had a bearing on the speed. Can I expect any speed increases or is 36 Mbps is the maximum I can expect? If that is the case, it seems pointless to pay the extra for 76 Mbps - is it possible to switch to the 38 Mbps package, and leave any major downloads for the off-peak Midnight-8.00am period that that package offers?
Hope these questions aren't too dumb - I'm new to this fibre malarkey!  Smiley

Estimated line speed:
68Mb (Download speed could vary depending on line conditions. Estimates are the maximum speeds that your phone line can support. These speeds are dependent on the package you choose.) - Checked on 2013-11-28 15:41:31
Current line speed:
37 Mb

Ask PN to put you on the correct line profile which should do the trick

Re: New Fibre Installation - What speed should I expect?

That's the killer. It should reset when Plusnet get the Delta report from BT, but sometimes doesn't.
You're probably going to have to wait until Monday to have this picked up by the DCT, or you could phone up and ask to have it reset (may have a long wait...)

Re: New Fibre Installation - What speed should I expect?

Hi there
As pointed out your current line speed wasn't set correctly
I've just changed this for you now to the correct one
You should notice a increase in the next 15 minutes but to speed things up you can log into your router then disconnect and reconnect your connection or reboot your router

Re: New Fibre Installation - What speed should I expect?

Hi All,
Apologies for piggy backing on the back of this one.
I had Fibre Broadband installed this week and the BT Openreach showed me my current download speed was 80MB and my upload speed was around 24MB. below is as a snapshot from the link provided by Jaggies earlier in this thread.
Estimated line speed:79Mb (Download speed could vary depending on line conditions. Estimates are the maximum speeds that your phone line can support. These speeds are dependent on the package you choose.)  - Checked on 2013-12-07 08:59:46Current line speed:70.4 Mb
If I go onto a site and do a speed check ( I used the following site http://www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk/?&again) ; my speed the results are completely different.it read 15.06MB download and 6.01 MB upload)
Can some one enlighten on what my true speeds are?
Many thanks,
Eddie

I would use speedtest.net for more accurate results.

Re: New Fibre Installation - What speed should I expect?

Are you getting these results using wireless or ethernet cable to connect to your router? If it's wireless, try connecting with an ethernet cable.
Can you do a BT Speedtest and copy and paste the results of Further Diagnostics in to your reply?
On the first screen, choose "Yes" at the end of the red check-list, then click "Begin Test". When you have the initial down/up/ping result, choose "Further Diagnostics", enter your phone number on the next screen and confirm it's correct, then click "Run Diagnostic Test".
This is my result from a just taken test:
1. Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
Download  Speed
11.32 Mbps

0 Mbps 21 Mbps
Max Achievable Speed
Download speedachieved during the test was - 11.32 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 4 Mbps-21 Mbps.
IP Profile for your line is - 11.71 Mbps
2. Upstream Test: -provides background information.
Upload Speed
0.94 Mbps

0 Mbps 0.83 Mbps
Max Achievable Speed
Upload speed achieved during the test was - 0.94Mbps
Additional Information:
Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 0.83 Mbps
