New FTTC install, Modem Lockup and issues

A couple of weeks back I decided to change over from ADSL to FTTC.  Not expecting a great deal of improvement but with a £5 saving I thought what could it hurt.
I think we are the last set of houses from the green cab, and so understood that speeds won’t be topping out.
On ADSL I was achieving 6.5meg DL & 0.7-1.0meg UL.  When I inquire about FTTC I was estimated at 15meg DL & 2meg UL.
After the install and another engineers visit I average 8.5meg DL & 0.5meg UL.
My setup is the Openreach modem (HG612?) and a Netgear WNDR3700, all setup spot on!
Now for my issues, first I would have expected better speeds, but I understand that the speed was only an estimate.  Next problem is when I have been connected for 5-6 hours the connection is locked up.  The modem still shows all green lights, but the internet connection dialog box in the router states a problem (no connection).  I re-boot the router but still the same, I have to reboot the modem each time.
One problem I have notice is apparent DOS attacks.  Although I’m not sure if these are pucker as it’s not intense attacks as I’d expect, perhaps 1 every 3 seconds (Please see below.)

I’m not sure what I’m missing, if there is anything I can do.  Should I worry about these Dos attacks?Huh
Any advice would be super.  Thank you.

Re: New FTTC install, Modem Lockup and issues

I agree the the firewall logs would be much more frequent and in greater numbers if it were an actual DOS attack. Are these still being recorded?
I've just checked your account and can't see any obvious causes for a drop in speeds, does this seem to vary at different times of day?

Re: New FTTC install, Modem Lockup and issues

I'm not too sure about the speeds and times ect.  All I know is that after a certain period its all locked up.
Not too fussed about the speed atm, just the modem locking up.
Although next door have just had BT Infinity installed and there line IP is 38.71meg DL & 2meg UL where as ours is 9.6meg & 2meg UL.

Re: New FTTC install, Modem Lockup and issues

I have written off the DOS attacks, I think the router was being overly sensitive.
I still have the issue of very poor speed.
Again my neighbor has checked his and his line IP is 35+mb/s, mine is 9.5mb/s.
Can you please advise if Plusnet is only allocating me this line IP, or if I have a fault limiting my speeds?
Than you.

Re: New FTTC install, Modem Lockup and issues

At present, your line is currently banded: WBC 7M - 14M No delay (INP 0) 6dB Downstream, UC No delay (INP 0) 6dB Upstream.
This means that your line will not connect any higher than 14336kbps (yours is: 14333kpbs). If your line remains stable as it is now for the next few days, this banding will be automatically be removed and your speeds should increase.

Re: New FTTC install, Modem Lockup and issues

Chris, thank you for the info.
Was I banded to restrict the line speed?  Was this due to the technical fault on my line that wsa sorted a few weeks back?
Thank you for your help!

Re: New FTTC install, Modem Lockup and issues

The Line Banding was probably due to a few disconnections have you've had historically, but depending on it's severity, can remove itself, such as this case.
The banding restricts your speeds ever so slightly to try and keep the line stable, it removes the banding bit by bit to find the balance of good speeds and good stability.
