Network Timeouts

Hi
I have been getting a 'Network Timeout' message over the last few weeks, regularly and at different times of day when trying to access Youtube.
The timeout is specific to Youtube. I can access most other sites usually with no touble.
What can be causing this ?. Is there anything I can do to investigate this.
Thanks

Re: Network Timeouts

One thing that might be worth trying is to add some public DNS servers such as those from OpenDNS and Google to your Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties list as well as the ones from Plusnet.
So if you have problems with for example Youtube you can change the preferred DNS server from Plusnets to one of the others and see if it helps.

Re: Network Timeouts

I pinged www.youtube.com at the command prompt and got the following...
Ping statistics for 46.82.174.68
Request timed out
Packets:Sent=4, Received=0, Lost=4 (100% Loss)
I'm not too savvy with the tech side of things (I'm in my early 60's). Could you please explain the above and what I might be able to do to resolve the Youtube issue ?
Thanks alot for your help.

Re: Network Timeouts

That IP appears to be a non-existant domain.
Using Plusnet's DNS gives the following for me.

C:\>nslookup www.youtube.com ns1.force9.net
Server:  ns1.force9.net
Address:  195.166.128.16
Non-authoritative answer:
Name:    youtube-ui.l.google.com
Addresses:  74.125.77.102
            74.125.77.100
            74.125.77.101
Aliases:  www.youtube.com

Re: Network Timeouts

Do you have antivirus and a firewall on your computer? When is the last time a virus scan was completed?
Google (who own youtube) seem to change the youtube IP addresses frequently, DNS returns different IPs now. Perhaps they do that to try to balance server loads.
Firstly please run
nslookup www.youtube.com
and
ipconfig /all
at a command prompt, and post the results..
The ipconfig command should show where your DNS is served from.
I am assuming you have a Windows computer; which version of Windows does it run (e.g. XP, Vista, 7)?
Could you check that your hosts file located at
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts
(which is a text file viewable using Notepad) contains only lines starting with #, a small number of empty lines
and either no other lines or just one containing
::1            localhost
