My speed saga continues...

Ok, so to fix multiple disconnects I moved my router to plug it into the master socket (test socket).
Seemed to work and also gave slight boost to speed - syncing at c2500 instead of 2000-2300
Bought a faceplate from ADSL Nation (XTE-2005) and connected this on Tuesday.  Again, this saw an increase in sync speeds - started at c3400 but soon dropped to 2974 for some reason.  Happy with that though.
Things have been running nice and steady since then.  But get home from work today and find my sync down at c1900 and profile dropped to 1500.  Rebooted my router and sync back at 2974.
Two questions:
1/ Why the drop in sync and what can I do to further diagnose the issue bearing in mind I'm on the master socket with a new faceplate?  This is starting to drive me up the wall.
Router is a Netgear DG834 but I can't find any logs on it that may give me more info..
2/ Why is my profile instantly dropped and yet I'll now have to wait three days again for it to be increased?
Results from speed test over last week:
Today 19:09  1425 kbps (178kB/s)  375 kbps (46.9kB/s)
Yesterday 12:03 2370 kbps (296kB/s) 375 kbps (46.9kB/s)
Tuesday 13:35 2353 kbps (294kB/s) 346 kbps (43.3kB/s)
Tuesday 12:31 2374 kbps (297kB/s) 375 kbps (46.9kB/s)
Monday 12:39 1765 kbps (221kB/s) 374 kbps (46.8kB/s)
Sunday 23:55 2272 kbps (284kB/s) 371 kbps (46.4kB/s)
Sunday 11:22 2373 kbps (297kB/s) 345 kbps (43.1kB/s)
Current router stats:
ADSL Link  Downstream  Upstream
Connection Speed 2912 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 57.0 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 8.3 db 16.0 db
I have disabled the upstairs extensions so only have the master socket downstairs.

The drop in sync could have happened for a number of unfathomable reasons.  Most likely it is related to something random and rarely occuring event that caused noise on the line.  It could well have been all the storms and lightning that we have had lately.  Don't forget that your line is long /noisy so you essentially are trying to hold onto a marginal connection that fluctuates up and down.  As we move into winter with longer nights and more electrical noise you are bound to see some deterioration from your performance during the summer.
The router stats of the Netgear are not particularly good for detailed diagnosis, but you can use a tool like Routerstats, or DMT Tool to record the performance of your connection.  You will need to leave your connection and a computer on which the recording application runs on all the time.

Because that's how the BT exchange modules work.  They have been configured with a bias towards achieving a stable connection, rather than an out & out top speed.  Their designers probably figured that people will complain more about an unreliable line than a slightly slower line.  Depending on the speed increase you may not need to wait as long as 3 days.  On the other hand for smaller fluctuations you may have to wait as long as 5 days!

I'm not going down that route, it can drive you doolally trying to get to the bottom of faults, going round and round in circles all the time. I'll just have to live with my 1187 max. download speed until I can swap ISP.

If you think that moving to another ISP will somehow fix your synch speed then you're in for a nasty shock.

Very true - and most other ISP's I have experince with won't have the very accessible and helpful staff that Plus.net do -

@Urlen - it is considered bad form to quote the whole of a preceding post, especially a long one Smiley
And just to reinforce what everyone else has said, you are very unlikely to get better speeds by changing ISP. ISP's all use the same BT wires, and it is these that determine your connection speed. What are the line statistics from your router? That will give us an idea of what can be expected from your line and whether or not you have a problem somewhere.
@Discord - with 57dB you have a long line and a small signal by the time it gets to your router. Long lines are naturally more prone to noise problems. The DG834 is a good router, but not necessarily the best at holding small signals. You might get better results from a 2wire 2700HGV or Speedtouch 585.
