My exchange has emerged from the stone age!

I thought my exchange was forever destined to be firmly stuck in the last century: Market 1, ADSL Max only - no LLU, no date for 21CN (and hence no FTTC or FTTP).
The good news: Today I found out that an LLU operator enabled our exchange on 01/09/2010
The bad news: It's TalkTalk!

Re: My exchange has emerged from the stone age!

Hi Steve M,
Actually I think it's another 2 OLO's (Other Licensed Operators)
There have to be 4 providers of broadband (BT included) at the exchange for it to be considered market 3
You can see more info about it here

Re: My exchange has emerged from the stone age!

Is there anywhere on the internet that details when BT anticipate upgrading the remaining telephone exchanges to 21CN ?
I have been checking "samknows.com" for years, only to see a date set for my local exchange and then for it to be removed - months after the date passed !    Cry
At the moment I have no idea whether the 21CN will appear in months, or years, or never !  Undecided

Hi purleigh,
The best I can do after talking to our 21CN master is this list and apparently if it's not on there then there's no date.

Re: My exchange has emerged from the stone age!

Thanks Jojo,
As my exchange "EAPUR" does not appear on that list either, does your "21CN master" have an idea of when BT expect to have the majority of exchanges working on 21CN ?
Knowing that piece of information would give a "worst case" guesstimate of time scale for smaller Market-1 exchanges !,
although I don't know whether an exchange that serves "940 premises" is small or not really ?

Re: My exchange has emerged from the stone age!

AFAIK there's only about 50% of exchanges 21cn enabled, either that or it's 50% of the uk population (can't remember which).
My exchange annoys me. There's cable, every LLU operator under the sun but no 21cn. Very annoying considering the fact that I get no errors on my line and have a 9db downstream attenuation! Crazy

What's stopping you switching to a LLU supplier?

Re: My exchange has emerged from the stone age!

Four reasons mainly (in no particular order).
1. Cost.
2. It helps to have a remote connection to an external Plusnet line from work for testing etc. I also get asked quite frequently to test kit/new apps etc. that would be rendered pointless if I was using another ISP.
3. I can fix my own problems.
4. I don't need 20mbps. Granted it would be nice, but even for a relatively heavy downloader (which i am) 7mbps already does what i need it to without making me impatient.

Re: My exchange has emerged from the stone age!

So why does your exchange annoy you  Grin
I'm annoyed with my exchange as I live closer to another. I'm on WBC and only get 2.5mbps but if I live 100 yards up the road I be on another exchange and will get 10-15mbps. That's annoying.

Re: My exchange has emerged from the stone age!

Bob, about 50% of the population is covered by 21CN but it's less than 20% of the exchanges. FTTC is now at 5% of the population but less than 2% of the exchanges.
