Moved from Plusnet Pro to Premium - iplayer slow?

I moved from Plusnet Pro yesterday to Plusnet Premium today, and my iPlayer downloads right now are rather suspiciously running at exactly 1Mbps, although my speed test is fine and at the usual 4.5Mbps
Is this Plusnet? Is it because I have changed package? I thought streaming counted as line speed on the Premium package?

Re: Moved from Plusnet Pro to Premium - iplayer slow?

Have you tried changing gateways?? that sometimes helps
To see which gate way your on

How to change & manage

Also check the ports  are being seen correctly  other wise it gets incorrectly throttled.
(0x80 and not reading 0x00 in wireshark for example)

Re: Moved from Plusnet Pro to Premium - iplayer slow?

Best thing is to run a wireshark capture to see if the traffic is in gold 0x80
Alternatively try this which may be a bit easier http://forums.thinkbroadband.com/tbbmeter/3741667-wanlan-software-with-tcpudp-and-traffic-management...

Re: Moved from Plusnet Pro to Premium - iplayer slow?

Thanks, no worries!
http://usertools.plus.net/@gateway
says I am on "unknown" gateway  Tongue
but a traceroute confirms I am on lo0-central1.pcl-ag04.plus.net, which shows no packet drops.
Wireshark confirms incoming iPlayer packets have DSCP 0x60 = interactive traffic.
I have tried bouncing my connection a few times and have been on pcl-ag01 and pcl-ag02.
Same....  Sad

Re: Moved from Plusnet Pro to Premium - iplayer slow?

Not at all. I decided not to make my first post an arrogant "I'm a network engineer so know what I'm on about" type post  Cool
Any thoughts anyone? Speeds dropped to an even more suspicious 512kbps....
Is 0x06 correct?

Re: Moved from Plusnet Pro to Premium - iplayer slow?

Just read your original post again and you are looking at downloads which are throttled on Premium but not on Pro.
I suspect a few of us were assuming you were looking at playing live not downloading

So what do I do about that?
Surely it isn't affecting only me?

see my edit above and have a look here.
I can't remember which bit iPlayer downloads come under but I suspect it is download servers

Re: Moved from Plusnet Pro to Premium - iplayer slow?

When I was on Pro, the "view my usage" showed my iPlayer downloads as "streaming".
It was on this basis (having found 20GB too restrictive) that I moved to Premium.
Interestingly, on day 1 of my time on Plusnet (Pro), it showed my iPlayer download usage as "web", which I thought was odd.
I've just checked it now, and it's done it again. I think I'd have rememberd 500MB of web traffic.......
Undecided
Maybe it's a product change on day 1 of the billing cycle that causes problems. I'll try again tomorrow

Re: Moved from Plusnet Pro to Premium - iplayer slow?

The coding which is applied depends on the product. hence on Pro everything is gold AKA Streaming but on Value and Premium it is gold plated so subject to restrictions in accordance with the 0x60 classification (gold is 0x80 which is the worst classification on Pro)

Re: Moved from Plusnet Pro to Premium - iplayer slow?

I'm sorry, I'm confused now.
Doesn't that show streaming and browsing as Gold on both Premium and Pro?

Re: Moved from Plusnet Pro to Premium - iplayer slow?

Yes it does.
Let me try to clarify.
If you are watching iPlayer live that is streaming and is classed as gold.
If you are downloading iPlayer for watching later that is classed as downloading not streaming.
You said in your first post - and I missed it - "I moved from Plusnet Pro yesterday to Plusnet Premium today, and my iPlayer downloads right now are rather suspiciously running at exactly 1Mbps"
These downloads are rate limited (gold plated) as opposed to watching live aka streaming (gold) which isn't

Re: Moved from Plusnet Pro to Premium - iplayer slow?

Well, I definitely think that clarifies things.
I suppose the frustration I feel given that I've been trying to make very informed decisions is:
a) The download server page http://www.plus.net/support/broadband/speed_guide/download_servers.shtml doesn't mention iPlayer
b) The usage graphs showed me all last month that my iPlayer downloads were "streaming" traffic. Why do they not show all the categories? Download servers isn't itemised?
I based my decision to move from Pro to Premium based on the fact that iPlayer downloads were treated as streaming. That said, the reason I originally started downloading iPlayer was because of slow streaming speeds on Tiscali, so I guess I'll be sticking with Premium but not downloading, just streaming.
Still can't decide if I'm happy with this outcome.
