Massive drop in speeds in the evenings

I have noticed a big drop in download speeds in the evenings.
Its 12.5meg all day and all evening the speed drops to around 2meg which is not ideal.

I understand its peak time and would expect to lose a bit, but over 10meg?

We switched to ADSL2+ recently, the speeds we got before were 6.6meg and it never seemed to drop in the evening.  We also used to be on the "Max premium" service but had that removed shortly after the switch to ADSL2+.
Could the lack of the "Max premium" service be causing this? I understand it gives you certain priorities at the exchange?

If so then can I please request that Max Premium is put back on our account as I don't mind paying extra to get full speed in the evening.

I did try calling about it but was on hold for over 15 mins and ran out of time, so hopefully the forum can help.

Regards
Paul.

Re: Massive drop in speeds in the evenings

Hi paulpicks21,
Max premium is not available on ADSL2+ Best thing to do is some BT speed tests when it's running slow and raise a fault.

Ok thanks Jojo.

Just ran the speed tester, 4.20pm and speeds are looking bad already Cry

And a pic from speedtest.net.

Speeds were 15.5meg only a few days ago.

Re: Massive drop in speeds in the evenings

As the speedtest result is below the acceptable speed shown for your line you should raise the fault. Further tests a bit later if it gets even worse will help prove to BT that there are problems at the exchange with capacity.

Re: Massive drop in speeds in the evenings

Hi paulpicks21
I noticed you opened a fault but never completed the questions. This has automatically closed it after 48 hours. If you're still having the issues then you will need to open it again.

JoJo,
Does the user get sent any notification when this happens?

Re: Massive drop in speeds in the evenings

Sorry yes, I started the process and got to the bit where it asked if I had tried another router.
It took me some time to find another router and set it up and then I gave it a while to see if there were any improvements.
Unfortunatly there were no improvements, the speed dropped below 1 meg for some of the weekend, at times it hit 2 meg and at others it would hit 15meg.
It really does appear to be linked to peak times, so I am wandering if it is the exchange being overloaded suddenly.
It's also worth mentioning that my exchange is due to be enabled for FTTC next month and there is a lot of activity in the area from Openreach. I wander if this could be a possible reason for the issues I am having?

Speed at 3.30pm today is 15meg, I will see if it dips right down again later and then follow the fault reporting through.

@Jelv  yes there was a note in the account section regarding this.

Thanks
Paul.

Re: Massive drop in speeds in the evenings

Fault now raised.
It stayed at the speed in my last post til around 11pm then it started rising back to decent speed again.

Heres how it looks at 7.30am for comparison.

Its 100% down to peak times.

Re: Massive drop in speeds in the evenings

I can see that some parts of the exchange are yellow with regards to the VP. I'd wait for the faults team to raise it to see what they can do about it. Smiley
