Re: Little peak time latency humps

Looking at a few forums but nothing much of significance.  Did a couple of speed tests a while ago.
The pattern I see is that regardless of browsing, sometimes I see virtually no hump (mostly Saturday nights it seems) and then others I see the small humps as per the second of my graphs.  I do more or less the same browsing most evenings.

At work currently but I believe from a trace route home I am on PCL-AG02.
1  205ms  RS-Gateway.local [78.129.174.1]
2  0ms    87.117.211.45
3  1ms    593.core1.thn.as20860.net [62.233.127.173]
4  1ms    202.core1.hex.as20860.net [62.233.127.1]
5  1ms    linx-gw2.plus.net [195.66.236.164]
6  1ms    ae1.pcl-cr02.plus.net [195.166.129.3]
7  1ms    vlan128.pih-gw3.plus.net [212.159.0.199]
8  2ms    link-b-central10.pcl-ag02.plus.net [212.159.2.167]
9  10ms   My router
Will update tomorrow morning with an updated graph. I've noticed that there has been the odd ping spike at peak times to both google.co.uk and bbc.co.uk (30ms-100ms). Pretty disappointing start to Plusnet coming from the non-traffic shaped Be*.
Always wondered if you are so far below capacity, would no traffic management actually make it go over? Funny how your testing it as the cause.
My current graph below:

Not been in to use the Internet since now. Flat so far...

Re: Little peak time latency humps

Yeah, I was thinking your graph looked better.  Run some ping tests to see if your latency stays consistent.

I hope this is still of some help. The bandwidth in use is about the amount you would see from a game but much less if you was the host in mw2-3 or bo2, console or PC.

Which gateway
You are currently connected to gateway pcl-ag05.
This is located in City Lifeline House.

Sorry I thought I had everything covered.

Change made on PCL-AG01 and PCL-AG02. If you can help and get on to one of those gateways would be really appreciated. Even if you aren't in to do any testing, if your line is on one of them and you have a Thinkbroadband test set up that would be useful for us to see too.

Re: Little peak time latency humps

Ok no problem.
I was told to use a pcl gateway because they have the upgraded traffic management system and would prioritize my gaming traffic correctly. Can you confirm this is true and if not witch gateway is best for gaming? Thanks.
Will change to PCL-AG01 or PCL-AG02 as soon as I can regardless.

Re: Little peak time latency humps

Most of the gateways are now converted across to the new DPI kit.

Done. 22:30'ish
Just so you don't miss this, the latency spikes have stop since changing gateway. Not sure if that corrupts the outcome of your tests.

Re: Little peak time latency humps

Here is my graph for yesterday 12-August, while on gateway PCL-AG01  -

I'm not convinced that the result is any better than any other day.   Undecided

We have a theory as to what's causing the problem based on some testing we've done in the labs and want to try out two possible fixes.
So next Monday we will be making some changes to PCL-AG01 and PCL-AG02 to see if we can improve this. Each one will have a different fix on it, like I say we've got 2 possible solutions so we want to try them both out.

After 33 gateway disconnect/connect sequences I have now swapped gateways to see whether the alternate gateway fix works any better for me.   Wink
