Line Speed slower than expected

Hi, Im new to Plusnet just switched over from Tiscali a few days ago.  I was expecting to get around 2.5 Mbps line speed as this was the estimate from Plusnet but Im only getting 0.93 Mbps.  I am around 1.7 miles by road from the exchange.  Any way I can increase my line speed?  My computer links directly to the main BT socket in the house by ethernet (RJ45).
Thanks in advance.

Re: Line Speed slower than expected

Hi and welcome to the forums
Can you post the line stats from your router? Have a look here if you don't know how to get it http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/frogstats.php
Also what does the BT speedtester give your profile as? http://speedtester.bt.com/
Someone then might be able to point you in the right direction.

Re: Line Speed slower than expected

Hiya Smiley
Can you try unscrewing the faceplate from your master socket and then plug the filter into the test socket?  You should see it on the right hand side.
Looking at yo0ur line, your sync speeds are currently 1760Kbps, which may improve once you're plugged into the test socket (because there appears to be a level of noise on your line).

Re: Line Speed slower than expected

I did what you said Jameseh, and it did raise the line speed, but only to around 1.1 Mbps  Sad
Could it be dodgy wiring?
Also ive got a Thompson router which isnt on that list adiewoo

It is under Speedtouch on that list, try here http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/frogstats.php#43

Re: Line Speed slower than expected

I got my BT broadband performance results:
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
    Your DSL connection rate: 1888 kbps(DOWN-STREAM),  448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 1000 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 303 kbps

Re: Line Speed slower than expected

You need to get the synch speeds from your router when plugged into the test socket and then plugged in as normal.
There wouldn't be any noticeable speed difference as it takes a few days for the profile to lift.

Was that the sync speed reported by your router or the BT speedtest or the actual throughput reported by a speed test?

That was the speed i got when using the broadband speed tester provided by plusnet (http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/)

Re: Line Speed slower than expected

You are very unlikely to see any increase in the results of speed tests for up to 3 days because of the way the BT systems work.
BT set an IP Profile (as reported by the BT speedtest) which is the speed they think your line can reliably sustain without too many errors. Your line will be restricted to that speed.
You need to work through the guidance you will be given in here to try and improve the sync speed and keep it stable. When you achieve that increases in test results will follow.

Re: Line Speed slower than expected

So Jelv, does that mean my speed isnt fixed at 1 Mbps so it could increase automatically?  Would a speed of around 1.5 Mbps be realistic then as the downstream speed is 1.76 Mbps?

Re: Line Speed slower than expected

As long as it stays above 1728kb/sec. then you will get an IP profile of 1500kbps.
The bit which puzzles me is an attenuation of 60dB when you are so close to the exchange.
Do you have any neighbours with broadband - if so see if you can get the attenuation from their router

Re: Line Speed slower than expected

I'm less than a mile away from an exchange and my attenuation is 50dB. The reason why the attenuation is high is because I'm not on that exchange but one approximately 3 miles away.  Angry

Re: Line Speed slower than expected

Your downstream SN Margin of 15 after you connected to the test socket means that BT have set a target noise margin of 15. See http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/linestats.htm#SNR_Margin for an explanation of SN Margin and the target. This is the highest target they set and implies that your line is having errors which the BT equipment has compensated for by increasing the target. If the errors can be sorted the target should be reduced and you will get a higher sync.
Before you switched to the test socket there were errors recorded by your router - how long had it been connected - it's showing only 16 minutes, is that right?
If you could leave it connected to the test socket and post the stats after say a day we can see how many errors are occurring.
