I'm experiencing volatile line speeds again after a period ( 2 months 25/9 -> 19/11) of stability since joining PlusNet from Demon in June '09.
I've always used www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest to check the speed on my line, but after failing to get the btsppedtester to work PlusNet TechSupp suggested I use mybroadbandspeed.co.uk.
I've performed a number of speed tests there and got higher than expected results, so I ran a few tests via thinkbroadband and immediately after each one another via mybroadbandspeed and got the following results:
thinkbroadband mybroadbandspeed
Kbps kbps
6323 stated as 6.2Mbps 86373 stated as 10.8Mbps
6320 stated as 6.2 Mbps 77064 stated as 9.63Mbps
5974 stated as 5.8Mbps 92251 stated as 11.5Mbps
So, who's right and why the difference?

Have you tried the Port 80 option on the thinkbroadband test?

Surely the impact of my Internet Secuirty Package (if any) would impact both tests equally?
Using the Port 80 option on thinkbroadband returns the same figures, latest are:
MyBroadbandSpeed 76546 kbps (9.57MB/s)
Thinkbroadband 6318.31 Kbps ( 6.2 Mbps )

Nope - they use different technologies.
Try disabling it and then test

welcome to the Forums.
have you tried your router stats, that will give a clearer indication of your synch speed. How to do it here http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/frogstats.php
do you know if you are on ADSL2, if not the mybroadbandspeed is correct, the other is impossible

You could also try speedtest.net and broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk which may give slightly differing results again, however they may help you see what the actual throughput is on your line.
