Re: Legacy PAYG Pro - Drop in speed?

Hi Jojo,
excellent news indeed. I've just run a speedtest and get much better results. Almost 7M/s. Only strange thing is running the BT Speedtester gives tells me I've entered an invalid phone number:
Authorisation failed Incorrect Telephone Number - Please try again
I guess that is because of the lift and shift and will sort itself out over time.
Thanks for a speedy response and excellent service
-Mat

It should do, The circuit ID has changed but the number is still the same.

Re: Legacy PAYG Pro - Drop in speed?

Hi Jojo,
my speeds seem to have dropped down again. The latest speedtest shows less than 5mb/s with all things as before. One thing I have noticed on my router is the Noise Margin and Attenuation. The figures are:
                            Up    Down
Noise Margin      24    15
Attenuation          10    13
Shouldn't they be lower considering the attached speedtest results. Can you do anything to lower the noise margin or is something wrong at my end please?
Thanks

Re: Legacy PAYG Pro - Drop in speed?

No!
The attenuation is dependant on how far you are from the exchange and sometimes by line quality. 13db says you are less than 1km from the exchange.
When the router and exchange negotiate the sync speed they go as high as they can without the noise margin dropping below the target. As you sync faster the noise margin drops. In your case you have reached the limit of 8128 possible using ADSL1 and so you have some spare noise margin left over. This tells us two things: your line has such a healthy noise margin it will be very resistant to interference and when you move to ADSL2+ it will sync a lot, lot faster.
I'd say your drop in speed still looks like exchange contention.

Re: Legacy PAYG Pro - Drop in speed?

So I've got it totally back to front then Lips_are_sealed
Thanks for that. I've been taking some bt speed tests at regular intervals and the results are pretty much what they were earlier in in this thread. Generally around half what they should be and certainly not what I was getting a few months ago. I'll take a few more throughout the weekend and post them. Maybe someone can suggest a course of action then.
Thanks

Re: Legacy PAYG Pro - Drop in speed?

You need to run a speed test at a time when there will be few people on - between 7 and 9 am on a Sunday would be good, but with your IP Profile any speed test over 6000 result would be good evidence. If speeds at that time are better it absolutely proves it is nothing to do with your setup and you can go ahead a raise a fault.

Re: Legacy PAYG Pro - Drop in speed?

Between 7 and 9am on Sunday I'm still in the land of nod I'm afraid.  Grin
Bit busy this weekend but I'll try and run some tests for various times over the next few days.
Strangely enough, last night my speeds seem to have returned to normal since I downloaded over 20GB between midnight and 8am this morning. Not sure if anything has been sorted but I'm not complaining 🙂
I'll keep monitoring
cheers
-Mat
