Legacy PAYG Pro - Drop in speed?

Hi,
In the last few days I've noticed a massive reduction in my download speeds, both Peak and Off Peak. I'm at work so can't provide full details at the mo' but basically my modem syncs as fast as possible and my current profile is 7150. I ran the BT Tester yesterday and it confirmed this but my current download was somewhere between 1-2MB IIRC. I assumed this might be contention but last night whilst downloading from newsgroups I managed to download less than 3GB when I usually get about 20GB.
Can someone tell me what's up please?
Also I wondered how my legacy PAYG Pro compared to Plusnet Extra Pro. I realise it might cost a couple of pound a month more but how about download speeds and caps. I like PAYG Pro because there are no restrictions. Is that the same on Plusnet Extra Pro? I've looked on the comparison tool (http://usergroup.plus.net/prodcomp2.php) and it seems that I should move. Is there a catch?
Thanks
-Mat

I've taken a quick look at your account and I can't see anything untoward. You're on the correct traffic management profile, your connection seems stable and your exchange isn't reported as congested Huh
PAYG Pro and Extra Pro are both comparable from a traffic management perspective, so you won't notice any difference from an experience point of view.

Re: Legacy PAYG Pro - Drop in speed?

Thanks Bob, seems a bit strange, but I'll have a look again tonight when I'm home.
WRT Extra Pro, isn't it the case that the speed could be managed for usenet during busy times where as that is not the case for PAYG Pro. Does the 'managing' happen much and to what extent? Does it get managed during off peak as well as peak hours?
Cheers

There aren't any rate limits applied on either account so you would expect to see Usenet traffic come down at line speed irrespective of the time of day.

Re: Legacy PAYG Pro - Drop in speed?

Hi Bob, thanks for the quick response. Maybe I misunderstood what I read, but doesn't this show some sort of management of usenet traffic:

Re: Legacy PAYG Pro - Drop in speed?

It is categorised as Gold so basically shouldn't slow down unless the system gets out of balance

Re: Legacy PAYG Pro - Drop in speed?

It's as Jim says, and is no different to how the traffic is managed on your current product. We have to say it's managed on the website so that we're compliant with a recent industry code of practice.

Re: Legacy PAYG Pro - Drop in speed?

Oh I See, so even on my existing PAYG Pro package the traffic could be managed? I didn't realise. So really, apart from costing me a couple of quid more per month I'd be better off on Extra Pro. 60GB instead of 20GB and all else the same. Are there any negatives I haven't seen please?
Thanks

Re: Legacy PAYG Pro - Drop in speed?

Brilliant.
As soon as my line is back up to proper speeds then I'll be looking to update. 60GB should satisfy the kids better than 20GB Wink
Still a bit concerned about my low speeds but unsure how to continue apart from waiting and seeing if it 'goes away'.
Thanks for all your help with the comparisons.

Re: Legacy PAYG Pro - Drop in speed?

Hi Bob,
since getting home I've run the bt checker twice and the results haven't been encouraging. This is for the second test about 20:15:
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
Download  Speed
900 Kbps

0 Kbps 7150 Kbps
Max Achievable Speed
Download speedachieved during the test was - 900 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 600-7150 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :8128 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 7150 Kbps
The first test at about 19:00 gave a download of about 1500Kbps.
The stats for the router show the following about 10 mins after running the last BT test:
Data Rate Up Stream 448 (Kbps.)
Data Rate Down Stream 8128 (Kbps.)
Noise Margin 27 dB (up) 10 dB (down)
Attenuation 7 dB (up) 14 dB (down)
Is there anything wrong? Nothing at my end has changed so I'd be very surprised.
I saw in one of the posts here that people are suggesting their IP profile is stuck at the wrong speed. Could that be my problem?
Thanks

Does https://portal.plus.net/my.html?action=stable_rate say your current line speed is 7150?

Yes it does and has for ages. That's what's strange. Nothing has changed at my end.

Re: Legacy PAYG Pro - Drop in speed?

1. Are you using a wired or wireless connection?
2. Check the status of your exchange at http://usertools.plus.net/exchanges/
3. What sort of speeds do you get if you run a test outside of the peak periods?

Re: Legacy PAYG Pro - Drop in speed?

Hi Jelv,
1. Wired connection but it's the same on my laptop using wireless
2. It's the Markyate exchange and these are the service outages:
BT Major Service Outages
BT Major Service Outages
This list shows Major Service Outages that PlusNet has been notified of in the last month, for the exchange "Markyate". To find more information, click a particular title.
: ILFORD ATM NODE 9223 : DEGRADED SERVICE
03/06/2011 17:48
: MILTON KEYNES NODE 02177 : PARTIAL DEGRADED SERVICE
25/05/2011 10:09
: READING NODE 05211 : OVER RUNNING PLANNED WORK
19/05/2011 02:04
apparently all are sorted now though. Not sure what they mean though. How does Milton Keynes, Reading or Ilford affect Markyate?
3. The BT speed checker is now giving an error and saying I should contact my ISP! but a 'normal' speed test at 23:34 shows a download speed of 3554kbps so better but still not as good as I normally get.
Thanks
-Mat
