Latency issues when gaming on PS5

Hello,

My son keeps getting kicked from online games due to High Latency issues.

The PS5 is connected via wi-fi to a TP-Link Archer VR600 modem router, via ADSL to Plusnet.

The ping regularly climbs above 1000ms, resulting in awful rubber-banding issues and subsequent auto-kicks from game servers.

I have carried out a traceroute which seems to point to some high numbers.  Please see the results below:

Tracing route to uk.www.bbc.co.uk.pri.bbc.co.uk [212.58.237.252]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

11 10 ms 10 ms 10 ms 212.58.238.5
12 10 ms 9 ms 9 ms 212.58.237.252

Trace complete.

I would appreciate any advice that you can give, to rectify this issue.

Kind regards.

Re: Latency issues when gaming on PS5

That traceroute is perfectly fine.

The final hop (which is all that matters really) is sub 10ms: -

12 10 ms 9 ms 9 ms 212.58.237.252

In fact, on an ADSL line, you're extremely fortunate to be geting response times like that.

Unfortunately though, your upload on ADSL will be little more than ~1mbps at best, meaning if anything on your network is trying to use any of that upload bandwidth, then gaming is likely to suffer.

Are you in an area that can get fibre? If so, I'd strongly suggest looking at upgrading.

Edit: To add - if you're serious about gaming and sensitive to latency then you should really look at wiring the PlayStation directly to the hub rather than relying on Wi-Fi; Wi-Fi is plagued with environmental factors that can affect the quality of the connection.
