Keep losing internet connection (FTTC)

Hi,
3 times in the last 24 hours my FTTC connection has dropped, Checking lights on the Modem they look normal but no internet light on the Router (582n). Have restarted router and eventually it picks up the connection, not sure but i suspect it is the router that has an issue (this is the 2nd 582 i have had in 3 months). Think it might be time to ditch it for something with better wifi performance and more reliable.
Only other thought was it was a plusnet issue but not seeing anyone else reporting similar issues.
Any thoughts?
Rob

I use a BT homehub 3, I think this is much more better than the plusnet crappy ones!  Get one on eBay for around 30 quid.

No problem with FTTC connection here. If the DSL light on the modem stays on then your VDSL link to the cabinet is still operating. Sounds like your router is dropping its PPPoE session with Plusnet's gateway. When it next drops, can you log into the management interface of the TG582n and see what it's telling you?

To do this, log into the router using a ethernet cable or WIFI and go to your web browser, Type in 192.168.1.254 (this is the plusnet default router ip address.  This will be different if you have changed it) You will be prompt to log in the username is admin and the pass is the serial number of the router (can be found on plastic card or underneath the router). Click Broadband then DSL the stats will be on that page.

He's on FTTC so there are no DSL stats. But you can at least see if the PPPoE session is up or disconnected.

Re: Keep losing internet connection (FTTC)

I've had several connection drops since wednesday (probably a coincidence, but upgraded from extra to unlimited which was applied on Wednesday), my speeds have also dropped significantly/become erratic and latency is all over the place. I switched to PN in November and up until weds I had a solid 70+ mbps and ping around 20ish m/s
Haven't got round to reporting it yet as its been half term haven't had the chance to do much testing other than quiet line test btw speedtest and the drops during the week have been around peak time and as its now the weekend thought it might be down to the gateway problems PN have been having.
Will be doing some testing and contacting them tomorrow though if it persists...

Re: Keep losing internet connection (FTTC)

Hi RobH,
Looking at your connection graph we're not seeing many drops at all?

Do the disconnections match up?
@DaveyH
The change in package will not make a difference regarding this.

Have the drops been caused by you? Was this because of the latency issues you experienced?

Re: Keep losing internet connection (FTTC)

Hi Rob
I've been with plusnet on an unlimited fibre contract for 5 weeks and I've had 3 routers - the original and two replacements from plusnet. My old (adsl2+) provider gave me 8/9 Mb/s download - consistently, including WiFi throughout the house and no problems for months on end.
I've had a poor WiFi experience so far - poor connection on WiFi, WiFi falling over, slow speeds away from the router. When everyone's at home I have maybe 8/10 devices trying to access the net, some cabled bust mostly WiFi. I've tried all the usual tweaks but no improvement.
This morning I went out and bought an Asus RT-N66U having read positive reports on the forum. It's early days as I only connected it half an hour ago but speeds are as follows (Mb/s):
Cabled to router - TG582n and Asus: #70 download and 17 upload.
By WiFi - adjacent to router - same
'Worst room in house' for a signal - TG582n 6 download - Asus 23.
That's pretty impressive and I've not done anything with the Asus other than attach the arials and run the set up wizard.
I suspect the TG582n (which is an 'entry level' router) doesn't cope very well with multiple connections.

What was the first router replaced for?  We see very few real router failures.  Most of the replacements we see actually turn out to be faults later on down the line, or a wireless issue which is probably more to do with environmental issues and the replacement router does nothing to help.
