Just moved from Sky LLU, speed and lag currently terrible.

Hi all,
I have been connected to Plusnet for 48 hours now and am so far quite unimpressed.
Have I made the wrong move?
I am coming from a full LLU Sky connection that was fine but changed to Plusnet to save money (£15 pcm vs. £25).
For long periods it is Ok but then for long periods it is absolutely awful, just had several web pages timing out including this one where I lost this post and have now rewritten it!
Could this be line training?
Sync speed is fine, actually slightly better than I had with Sky (17669 kbps vs ~ 172xxx kbps).
Any ideas?
Thanks allot for any replies Smiley

Re: Just moved from Sky LLU, speed and lag currently terrible.

Can you try a couple of speed tests: http://www.speedtest.net and http://speedtest.btwholesale.com/ (run the Further Diagnostics)?
Also, are you connected wired/wireless?

Re: Just moved from Sky LLU, speed and lag currently terrible.

Hi Andy,
Doesn't seem to make any difference wired or wireless. I'm using a Billion 7800n, didn't pay the P&P for Plusnet's Thompson. Synced to the exchange at 443 / 17699 kbps. Ping looks really bad, ran the test twice:

BT Wholesale:
Download speedachieved during the test was - 13.61 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 4 Mbps-21 Mbps.
IP Profile for your line is - 15.61 Mbps
Upload speed achieved during the test was - 0.24Mbps
Additional Information:
Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 0.45 Mbps
We were unable to identify any performance problem with your service at this time.
It is possible that any problem you are currently, or had previously experienced may have been caused by traffic congestion on the Internet or by the server you were accessing responding slowly.

Re: Just moved from Sky LLU, speed and lag currently terrible.

Your pings are really really high.
Can you post your router stats and do a pathping (Start > Run > cmd) to BBC.co.uk?

Bit disappointed at the moment as my Sky LLU connection didn't skip a beat in the 2 years I had it Sad
When its working its fine but when it's not working fine it's not just for a few minutes its for upto say an hour or two.. then an hour or two ok.. Look at it now!:

Re: Just moved from Sky LLU, speed and lag currently terrible.

I've just moved from BE (LLU) and had a very similar same experience. Speed ok, but terrible intermittent latency.

Re: Just moved from Sky LLU, speed and lag currently terrible.

HI jazz, i not long left sky unlimited too, got constant speeds of 14-17mb, as soon as i switched to plusnet my speed dropped to around 3-4mb, my pings are ok tho, just cant understand why plusnets speeds are so shockingly slow

Re: Just moved from Sky LLU, speed and lag currently terrible.

It looks like a fault somewhere if its intermittent like that. Probably worth running through the faults process here http://faults.plus.net and get it logged.

Re: Just moved from Sky LLU, speed and lag currently terrible.

Hi jazzist,
Welcome to our community forums,
I've checked over your connection and can't see any obvious issues that are causing the speed test results you posted.
Would it be possible if you could run through our faults checker at http://faults.plus.net and I'll get that looked over once you done it?

Hi Chris,
It seems to have sorted itself out the last couple of days.

@jazzist, you know you can get that upload sync uncapped if upload speed is important to you....

Re: Just moved from Sky LLU, speed and lag currently terrible.

Didn't know until last night and phoned at midnight to ask for it to be done 🙂
Could explain why it goes absolutely to pot when one person is uploading eg a photo to Facebook. I think I had around 1mbit up on sky.

Re: Just moved from Sky LLU, speed and lag currently terrible.

Sync now 1219 / 20355 kbps, IIRC Sky was something like 7xx / 17xxx  Cheesy

Don't believe that half of the country has a better connection than this!?

If it keeps working like this then I'm delighted.
