Issues with gaming pings/QoS on router

Hi, when I was on Virgin and using their netgear, when gaming on my PC via internet my pings were not affected by my flatmate watching netflix on his xbox.
However when using the Plusnet technicolour and the same setup (PC on ethernet, xbox on wireless)  My pings are affected greatly when he's watching something, shooting upwards of 999 ms sometimes.
Now, normally I'd just adjust the QoS settings in the router to prioritise the correct ports, but the tecnicolour doesn't allow that Sad  Is there anything I can do to not kill my gaming ping whilst my flatmate is streaming?
Is the issue because the technicolour is treating the xbox as a gaming console and prioritising that traffic as well?
Any help would be appreciated,

Re: Issues with gaming pings/QoS on router

@'fandyboy' - Welcome to the forum !

  • Is there any reason why you can't use the old Netgear router, and substitute your Plusnet connection settings ?,
as the chances are that the old Netgear might be a better router, and if it isn't then it is a no cost thing to try out.

  • When you were connected with Virgin, presumably you were on their LLU connection, and have now moved over to a BT line.
Do you know what type of ADSL you are now on ? (ADSL, ADSL2, or ADSL2+)

  • A frequently seen problem on this forum, is new customers being provisioned on ADSL2/ADSL2+, but with their upstream sync speed artificially capped at 443Kbps.  If this has happened to you then ask in this thread for the Plusnet DCT staff to place an order to uncap your connection, as a low upstream speed can cause latency issues if the broadband is more than lightly loaded.

  • The fact you are seeing latency of 999ms, might be an indication that your local BT exchange has a fault or is congested - what is the name of your exchange ?

  • What is the exact model of Technicolour router that you have ?, as there may be other readers of this thread who can help with setting QoS via telnet commands.  I've always had my own modems and routers so can't really help much with Technicolour issues.

Re: Issues with gaming pings/QoS on router

Hi thanks for the reply, doing a ping trace without streaming I get 10-11ms so I think the connection is fine.
This is my normal connection speed.  I might try putting the Netgear back in.

Hi fandyboy,
Would you be able to get us a Wireshark Capture of this happening?

Does the same thing happen, for testing purposes, if you start streaming on your PC as well as gaming?
