Is uncapping your upstream speed a good idea?

Undecided I  asked  for my upstream speed to be uncapped.
This typically increased  from 375 Kbps to 1000Kbps.
But my downstream speed decreased, on average from 6500 to 5000 Kbps.
(I was told by plusNet in advance of uncapping that down load speed  may drop.)
1. Did I do the right thing in asking to be uncapped?
2. Will connection stability be affected by uncapping?
thanks.
note: I mainly use the Internet for surfing. I am not a gamer.

Re: Is uncapping your upstream speed a good idea?

Do you do large uploads? Do you send large emails? Was the time taken when doing either of those an issue for you?
If the answer to all those questions is no, asking for your upload to be uncapped was the wrong thing to do.

I like to see a logical reason why uncapping the upload speed will have an affect on the download speed. I can't think of one. Shocked

I've had no drop in speed yet running uncapped Cool

By capping the upstream, unused upstream bins are used for downstream I believe.

Re: Is uncapping your upstream speed a good idea?

The only issue I can think of is the ADSL modem might have to re-train when the upstream speed becomes unsustainable. However, upstream uses lower frequencies, which is the "better part" of the line, so that shouldn't be much of an issue.

Take a look at my thread in this forum titled 'uncapping upload speed'. I think that will answer your question!

Thanks to everyone who replied.  Cheesy
The answers have helped me understand the issues and might help others.
I am probably going to leave the upspeed uncapped, providing the connection remains stable.
Having moved from Sky Broadband a month ago,  I now have  faster speeds at a lower price.
A much better Customer service with an excellent site that others should benchmark against.

Re: Is uncapping your upstream speed a good idea?

"Uncapping of upstream" is a term that normally applies to ADSL2+.
If you've asked for this on ADSL 2+, then the upstream speed is improved by stealing some of the lower frequencies on the line, taking them away from the downstream and giving them to the upstream.
The frequencies are the ones that are going to be your best downstream frequencies, so the consequence of losing downstream bandwidth is very natural.
If you are on ADSL and are paying for the "max plus" facility, then the extra upstream bandwidth comes from allowing more data on the same upstream frequencies. This means there are no stolen downstream frequencies, and therefore not likely to be much change to the downstream bandwidth.
I'm not sure what the position is if you are using the 21CN, so *could* be on ADSL 2+, but then deliberately limit it to ADSL.
Do you pay anything to get the upstream uncapped?

No bins are taken from the downstream allocation to supply an uncapped upstream speed. Annex M does use bins from the downstream allocation to improve upstream speed.

Wombat.  I've just paid my first bill and nothing was charged for uncapping.
