It is faster during the day - but this is a Sunday evening and should be a quiet time in the PN world.
So, the question is - Is this a reasonable download speed?

For information, my figures are now
Today 18:23 918 kbps (115kB/s) 378 kbps (47.3kB/s)
so slightly better - but why is the 918 not 2500?

Have you ever seen speeds over 1Mbps?

Yes - today I got just a fraction over 1Mbps
Today 19:28 1088 kbps (136kB/s) 373 kbps (46.6kB/s)
It is quite noticeable that the % complete indicator shows the file coming in at very varying speeds. I suspect that if it came in consistently at the highest speed then my overall speed would be quite good. That 1088 is a bit fluky for instance, most of the time it was less than 1088, briefly it was higher and 1088 is simply the average.
Perhaps also relevant, when I am downloading a file, I can get quite a reasonable speed reported on Firefox (100+ kB/s). But it turns out to be fake because it is simply the speed that the last little burst came in at and there is often quite a pause before the next little burst. I am not sure now whether this is daytime or evening though.
Jim
ps Even better
Today 22:44 1297 kbps (162kB/s) 376 kbps (47kB/s) so perhaps the improvements you are making are working - but more would be nice!

Do you see any improvement when running a BT Speedtest? Does it report higher speeds than on our own speedtester?

Today 22:50 924 kbps (116kB/s) 377 kbps (47.1kB/s)
Today 21:08 831 kbps (104kB/s) 379 kbps (47.4kB/s)
Today 20:53 1036 kbps (130kB/s) 373 kbps (46.6kB/s)
Today 20:50 1963 kbps (245kB/s) 375 kbps (46.9kB/s)
The result I like is the bottom one! Shame it was a once off. I did nothing between these results by the way.
I cannot run the BT SpeedTester - FireFox just shuts down when I try to load it. I did try SpeedTest.Net and got 1.02Mbps at 22:55 - so not far from the same results as yours.

Just as an experiment, I tried a speed check first thing this morning - and lo and behold I get speeds of 2.4Mbps - which for my line is very good. I achieved that speed three times in a row over 15 or 20 minutes.
This evening - and its only 5pm and a Friday - the speeds are down to 800bps which is what I have been getting quite regularly over the last few weeks during the evening.
I think PlusNet's toys are too complicated for them - they do not know how to make them work - or they are trying to get by without spending any money. I am fed up with reading apologies and thank-yous for being patient. I am running out of patience.

We really need to see the results of a BT Speedtest, do you have another browser you can run it in?
This will help determine where the problem lies.

I think its more a question of does BT have a speedtester that works!
I managed to run TAP1 twice on different days. Both tests concluded that I was getting less than 600kbps (The second test I wrote down the figure for :- 410kbps - that was just a few minutes ago, the first one was similar but I forget the exact figure - perhaps its in the records?)
However, when I tried to run TAP2, the address the programme puts in (test2.speedtest.bt.com or somesuch) could not be found and when I tried using two IP's I found on the internet for the Speedtester, they refused to allow my browser to connect. I tried pinging the DNS that BT supplied and got 100% loss - though whether that is because they are programmed to refuse to reply or were just sulking I cannot tell.
Therefore I cannot complete TAP2.
However, remember that at 8am on several days the line has achieved a very respectable 2400kbps with the same wiring, same modem, same everything.
I will keep trying over the next few days but any hints would be appreciated.

I appreciate what you're saying, but that doesn't rule out things such as exchange congestion (a congested exchange is not likely to give slow speeds at 8am).
That said, I only care about the results of test 1, so if you can run it and post the results, and then the results of a standard speedtest, that'd be grand.

Your wish is my command - some days anyway
BT SpeedTest at 18:15 on 17/11/09
Download speedachieved during the test was - 480 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 600-7150 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :3200 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 2500 Kbps
Followed by a normal speed test:-
I will continue and try for the second BT test and edit it in here if I have any success. (Edit) No, no joy. The window that opens cannot find server.
My exchange is green by the way.

Well, on the bright side we should be able to get BT to do something about it.
You'll need to raise a speedfault via http://faults.plus.net though.

We were unable to complete your requested action. This may be the result of a temporary fault.
Please try again in a few minutes.
Tried three times tonight over a couple of hours - will try again tomorrow.
