I'm getting a sense of deja-vu now from about seven years ago! The good news is - The two are now connected - even though the Technicolor won't show on the device scan and I cannot access the modem's admin page or - for that matter - the internet. Stupid thing is, I know what's wrong, but it's been so long I can't remember how I got round this before!
Don'tcha just love 'em eh!

Sounds like the laptop is set with a static IP rather than DHCP, and so it dosen' t have an IP in the routers subnet or the correct default gateway.
