Ipad Mini

My wife has just bought an iPad mini, but we can only connect it to the internet if it is used in the same room upstairs where our BT Voyager wireless router is located. Other devices in our household, such as another iPad, a laptop PC, and an an android phone all connect without problem in other parts of the house. Could this be a problem with the iPad mini that she has bought? Or is there something I can do to either the router or the iPad mini (apart from hitting them) to allow us to use my wife's new pride and joy elsewhere in the house?

Re: Ipad Mini

Which model of Voyager are you using? This also needs someone who knows about iPad minis as well as wireless to answer.

Re: Ipad Mini

The BT Voyager router is likely to be about 10 years old or so, and will have Wireless G at best. Maybe time to think about a replacement?

Re: Ipad Mini

Gosh someone has replied. Great to hear from you, thanks. I was beginning to get a bit of a complex as I had heard from no one for several days after posting my query.
My router is a Voyager 2110. We've been in touch with Applecare. As a first step they suggested changing the router channel. We did this, but there was no improvement. The next step was to reset the iPad mini to factory settings. This is because my wife had downloaded everything from her other iPad and there is a chance that some corrupted software had reached the iPad mini. We are now at the stage of starting to test the iPad mini with its factory settings to see whether there are no longer any internet connection problems. If there is no improvement the iPad mini will be replaced.

Thanks Jaggies.  I was typing my reply to Atherone when your message came through. I suppose I might be due for a replacement router from Plusnet.  What would you recommend from their stock?

Re: Ipad Mini

As far as I know they only do the Thomson Technicolor 582n - it has mixed reviews, but they supply it for £40 plus £5.95 delivery, and the £40 is deferred for 12 months, so you only pay that if you leave Plusnet within a year of buying one. You still have to pay the delivery charge, though
See here.

Re: Ipad Mini

They only really do the TG582n, many would describe it as a budget modem/router but it is adequate for most uses. You pay the P&P and it's on a deferred contract for 12months then the £40 is written off.
It's a bit of a pig to customise if you want a specialist setup as you need to use the CLI for that. There's basics you can do through the GUI.
It's a Broadcom chipped device (as is the Voyager) but a later chip.
If you are having wireless issues I would wait and see how that pans out first as in some situations the 582n doesn't give ideal coverage, other people have no problem with it.
What sort of connection have you got atm, speed? 20CN or 21CN?
Edit: I see Jaggies beat me to the first bit  Wink  I thought I heard there may be another one lurking in the background that may be on trial, not sure, I haven't checked, just a rumour.

Re: Ipad Mini

Hi,
If other devices, including other iPads connect OK, then I would suspect the odd man out device!

Re: Ipad Mini

Hi all,
Just to clarify, we no longer defer the cost of anything against accounts any more so the provision of a new router will either be at cost to the customer as you outlined, or it will be completely free of charge with a new contract.
I would suggest giving the Customer Options team a quick call on 0800 013 2632, you will most probably be able to take a new router along with the possibility of a new deal in exchange for a contract.

Re: Ipad Mini

The usual way to deal with connectivity problems on iPads/iPhones is to delete the offending connection from it. Then do a reboot - press and hold power button and Home button until the Apple logo reappears, then re-enter the connection details!

@Adam C reply #8
Does that mean you've got rid of the Cessation charge  Grin Grin Grin    - nope I've still got one  Sad
Personally I think this maybe a bad move not being able to have it deferred, but does completely free of charge include free postage?
Is there any others available besides the 582n?
@chaswick
In light of the above, I would have a good look at what's around on the market and at what price and what may best suit your own network requirements.

Re: Ipad Mini

@NeddLudd,
That solution (in my experience) tends to be applicable where the device will not connect at all.  This situation rather suggests that does not apply.  It connects when near the router, but not when further away in areas where other iPads work.
Given that other devices work there but the newer iPad mini does not, I'd conclude that the iPad mini's wifi receiver is deficient.  Either it is defective or it has a lower sensitivity (requiring a stronger wifi signal) than the other devices.
A replacement iPad mini seen to be working would indicate a defect in the original.
A replacement iPad mini "failing" in the same way points to a design deficiency (compared to previous iPads) indicating that the mini requires a stronger wifi signal than other similar devices.  Such knowledge would be helpful to anyone thinking of buying a mini.
If replacing the router as a potential solution is adopted, then obtaining a device capable of supporting concurrent dual bands would be a smart move as most iDevices support the 5GHz band.
